Teaching Fellowships

Applicants to the Carolina Friends School Teaching Fellowship are a diverse group of curious, lifelong learners, who connect with Quaker Values and find themselves at a pivotal point in their professional lives. They are individuals who connect to the belief that each person brings a unique light to the community, an excitement and openness to learning, and a passion and serious commitment  toward becoming a teacher. 

Applicants should be a college graduate with some beginning experience working with children. Previous coursework in education is not required, but beneficial. This is a two-year, full-time, salaried program.

The goals of the Teaching Fellowship Program are multifaceted. They include objectives that support the growth of all stakeholders, including the students, the teaching fellows, the mentor teachers, the Lower School staff and the greater Carolina Friends School community. While the needs of these participants often overlap, sometimes they may seem to be in opposition with each other. While working within the framework of this program, it is important to allow time for reflection and introspection about the ways in which your daily practices support the entirety of the following set of goals. 

• Provide students with a low student-to-teacher ratio to maximize their potential as learners, enhance their classroom experiences, and provide more opportunities to differentiate students’ learning through strong and meaningful relationships with professional educators. 
• Provide teaching fellows with consistent hands-on teaching experiences that are inspired by the following components: current best practices in education, progressive ideologies, anti-racist practices, Quaker tenets, and student-centered motivations. 
• Provide mentor teachers with the opportunity to continually grow as professionals by reflecting on their practices with teaching fellows and fellow mentor teachers. 
• Provide Lower School staff with the expertise and individual strengths that teaching fellows bring to their work in staff meetings, their collegial relationships and their daily interactions.
• Provide the Carolina Friends School staff and community with the opportunity to spread the school’s mission by forming long-lasting and meaningful relationships with the teaching fellows.
