Middle School Learning Specialist

THE OPPORTUNITY:

Carolina Friends School is seeking a full-time Middle School Learning Specialist to join our staff in August 2022. This position is an exceptional opportunity to collaborate with staff, students, and families to support an innovative middle school learning needs program. Responsibilities will include overseeing the learning needs in the Middle School, working with both Middle School students and staff to support learning differences, and to support the Carolina Friends School Student Success Program (SSP).

Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Directing instruction of special education intervention classes in math and language arts for grades 5-8 
  • Developing elective classes to support learning and Middle School programming
  • Screening of students to determine effective accommodations and interventions
  • Writing accommodations plans for students with diagnoses
  • Interpreting  psychoeducational reports
  • Providing staff development training around learning needs related topics, including differentiation 
  • Supporting teachers in implementing accommodations plans and differentiated teaching
  • Working with teaching staff and advisors to write behavior plans for students when needed
  • Coordinating and clerking meetings with parents and teaching teams for students with learning needs 
  • Collaborating with and supporting the Student Success Program director

Strong Candidates Will Demonstrate:

  • Master’s Degree in Special Education (preferred)
  • At least 7 years of experience in special education
  • Experience with a range of learning needs and ages, especially middle school
  • A demonstrated ability to develop and write learning and/or behavior accommodations plans
  • Skills and experience in communicating with parents
  • An informed understanding of and deep appreciation for adolescents and their holistic development
  • A willingness to understand and explore how power and inequality, influenced by factors such as race, class, gender, sexuality, and learning and physical disabilities, impact our students and families
  • An understanding of and strong affinity for Quaker philosophy and the School’s mission
  • Strong interpersonal skills — a natural ability to work with a diverse community of students, staff, and parents and to interact collaboratively in an educational community committed to diversity and inclusion.
  • A commitment to continuous professional learning, including the application of current educational research, and participation in professional development opportunities.
