The Opportunity:

Carolina Friends School (CFS) seeks a full-time, salary, non-exempt Grounds person/Maintenance Associate. This position is a vital School’s Shop team member and reports to the Director of Facilities. This position is benefits-eligible.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Perform grounds maintenance functions, including mowing, weeding, trimming, watering, planting, downed tree/limb clean-up, and other related duties or assignments
  • Perform general maintenance functions, including carpentry, plumbing, and basic electrical work
  • Support athletic field operations and facilities as directed by the Director of Facilities in consultation with the Director of Athletics.
  • Support and facilitate campus snow and ice removal and treat walking spaces for pedestrian safety
  • Work with one or more sections of Upper School students each trimester on service projects directly related to grounds and campus maintenance projects.
  • Adhere to all safety policies and procedures, as mandated by school and state
  • Adhere to all school policies
  • Perform other related duties necessary for the operations and maintenance of the Carolina Friends School buildings and grounds, including all aspects of vehicle maintenance and any or all other duties assigned by the Director of Facilities or designee

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Solid carpentry skills and basic cabinetry joinery
  • Knowledge of general plumbing and electrical work in a school setting (including an ability to understand and communicate best building practices)
  • Current Class C driver’s license with a satisfactory motor vehicle record, as required by school risk management standards
  • Ability to drive school vehicles
  • Demonstrated knowledge and physical ability to perform the tasks as outlined above
  • Ability to operate lawnmowers, tractors, snow blowers/plows, and other maintenance machinery
  • Ability to climb and perform basic arborist functions and construction work
  • Basic knowledge of small and vehicular engine maintenance and repair
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines,  and display accountability for one’s work
  • Ability to work with diverse constituents and colleagues and interact collaboratively in an educational community committed to diversity and inclusion
  • Flexibility as new priorities are identified
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for working with adolescents and co-workers within a learning environment
  • Demonstrated professionalism and appropriateness in an environment including children 
  • Demonstrated commitment to understanding and exploring how power and inequality, influenced by factors such as race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, neurodivergence, and differing physical abilities, impact our students,  families, and colleagues
  • Demonstrated interest in and affinity for Quaker philosophy and the School’s mission
  • Ability to work occasional extended hours and weekends

This position requires lifting and carrying of equipment up to 40 lbs and working in extreme weather conditions.  Extended hours, evening, and weekend work may be required.
