Rising seniors prepare for statewide summer STEAM intensives

Five of our current juniors, the Class of 2019, have been accepted into highly selective academic summer programs. Three students will be attending Summer Ventures, a statewide STEM program offered by the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM), and two will be attending Governor's School of North Carolina in theater and natural science programs.

Summer Ventures is a program for academically talented North Carolina students who aspire to careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. For accepted students ranging from rising seventh graders through high school seniors, the program offers specialized coursework in areas such as robotics, aviation technology, forensics, and computational chemistry. It is a four-week residential program on UNC campuses, including Appalachian State, UNC-Charlotte, and East Carolina University.

The Governor's School of North Carolina is the oldest statewide summer residential program for intellectually gifted and talented high school students in the nation. The five and one-half week summer residential program integrating academic disciplines, the arts, and unique courses is open to rising seniors only and is located on two campuses: Governor's School West at Salem College in Winston-Salem and Governor's School East at Meredith College in Raleigh. The program is administered by the Public Schools of North Carolina, the State Board of Education, and the Department of Public Instruction through the Exceptional Children Division.

We applaud the work of these students, and are eager to witness the ways in which their summer experiences will enrich these students and our entire Upper School community in the coming school year!
