Course: Join us for week of Story-Telling and Art Making! We'll be learning the histories of fantastical creatures from many cultures, then integrating the stories into a variety of artistic creations. We'll combine guided projects with responsive inquiries based on the group’s interests. Over the course of the week we'll use a variety of materials to explore painting, printmaking, mixed-media and much more!Instructor: Originally from Michigan, Ariel Durrant relocated from Oakland, California to join CFS in 2017. They hold a degree in Human Ecology from College of the Atlantic. Ariel has fifteen years of experience working inside and outside the classroom as a nanny, environmental educator, and community based artist. As an artist, Ariel is creative, flexible, and passionate about projects. As an educator, they apply these same qualities to interactions with children and to the working environment. They design experiential and play-based learning environments that nurture the inner and outer worlds of students. Ariel is deeply committed to social justice movements, and embraces the life-long learning required to live in constant conversation with the systemic inequities and injustices within our societies. They believe educational philosophies that support critical thinking, compassion, and creative problem solving are essential in creating a cultural shift towards social equality and solidarity. Ariel identifies as Genderqueer and uses they/them/their pronouns in the singular.
Fee, Fi, Fo, Fum: Fables and Fairytales (5-9)

Instructor: Jeannine Borzello is an artist and educator (and ASL interpreter, just to throw in a twist) who has been teaching in the U.S. and abroad for the past 24 years. Involved in both visual and performing arts, she has taught art, photography, and design as well as acting as set designer, choreographer and assistant director for productions that range from Seussical Jr. and Honk Jr. to Proof. She is very involved with promoting the arts both in and out of the classroom as a board member of the North Carolina Art Education Association (NCAEA) and teacher advisory councils at Duke University's Nasher Museum of Art.
While not in the classroom, she continues to freelance as a graphic designer and photographer. A native of New York, she has called North Carolina home for the past 15 years, recently becoming a new homeowner in Chapel Hill where she lives with her son and new puppy.
Creek Explorers (6-9) | Waitlist

Course: Head out to our nearby creek and spend the day exploring what’s hiding under the rocks and ferns and inside tree trunks. We’ll do some light trekking and learn some new skills, make miniature shelters and boats, collect materials for our mini-terrariums, make crafts from our finds, do some decorative painting, do some fishing, practice water safety, and enjoy the fun outdoor days of summer, including at the Eno River Park!
Instructor: Daniel Okoniewski is excited to be spending his fifth summer at Carolina Friends School! A transplant from the Buffalo, NY area, and a graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Daniel made an early career transition from working with the Olympic Sports Program at UNC-CH to working with kids of all ages. Since then, he has run a number of health and wellness programs for kids and young teens at the Chapel Hill/Carrboro YMCA, worked as an educator with kindergarteners and fourth and fifth-graders at Carrboro Elementary, and forth and fifth-graders enrolled in the LEAP program at Seawell Elementary. When he isn’t working on a graduate degree in the Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Program at North Carolina State University, or working with kids in some other capacity, you can probably find him cycling on some back roads in the area or hiking the Eno River trails with Mrs. O and his trusty sidekick, Blue.

Course: An active, fun-filled week of sports adventure just for you! We learn how to play a variety of sports, focusing on skills and learning the rules. We work on team building and create some crafts that go along with our new indoor and outdoor games! We concentrate on learning how to play, building confidence, keeping in shape, and receiving guidance and encouragement from our coach. An excellent class for the active or wannabe active camper!
Instructor (Weeks 3, 9): Achiri Acha has been at CFS since he was six years old. He mentored with Jordan Shamp in Sports camp, became a counselor-in-training, and then moved on to become a camp assistant and instructor for the past six summers. Achiri has worked in Extended Day at Lerner School, School’s Out Camps at the Jewish Community Center and currently works at USA Ninja Challenge during the school year. Achiri's goal is to be an elementary school physical education instructor and coach.
Instructor (Weeks 5, 7): Leslie Atherholt works in the Durham Public Schools. She came from Washington, DC where she taught physical education and other subjects to elementary school students. She has also worked in schools in Central and South America. Leslie attended East Carolina University for her undergraduate program and holds a Master’s degree in Education. She has been teaching for 20 years. Leslie has spent many summers in camps and loves camp! When not working Leslie is learning and exploring North Carolina with her family.

Course: LEGO camp is just around “the block” for us! We’re going to have a fun-filled week of challenges building with LEGO. Imagine you are floating on the LEGO Coast Guard Station fishing and watching for sharks. Be Emmet or Wyldstyle, a figure from the LEGO movie, and look for the piece of resistance...it’s there somewhere. Become a Star Wars spaceship and zoom around with the enemy fighters. Into super heroes? You can enjoy building with Captain America, Batman, and Superman as you battle in Smallville. Feeling animal-like? Create cool battles with the Chima Scorpion Stinger or the Spider Stalker. Ninjago anyone? Be a master builder with the Ninjagos as they try to bring order to the LEGO environment. We can create our very own LEGO City and invite all the action figures to join in the fun. If you have LEGO you would like to bring to camp, please visibly mark them well so they will not get mixed in with the camp sets.
Instructor: Sherry Wilshire-Eshelman lives in Orange County and is a graduate of Virginia Tech (VPISU) where she received a B.A. in Russian Language and a minor in chemistry and math. Sherry home-educated two sons and received her teaching certificate from UNC-CH. She taught third grade at Duke School for 10 years and then became an academic tutor in the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools at CFS. Sherry loves to build and create with LEGO. This is her fourth year as LEGO camp counselor and hopes to ignite master building in the campers. Everything is awesome in LEGO camp!

Instructor: Cyrise Davis holds a B.A. in Art Education K-12 and a B.S. in Commercial Art and Photography. In addition to her freelance photography, she’s worked 10 years as an art and photography teacher at The Hawbridge School in Saxapahaw, as a site coordinator and lead teacher for a middle school after-hours program, and as a YMCA summer camp counselor. Four years ago Cyrise joined the CFS family as the AfterHours Director, substitute teacher and camp counselor. Cyrise employs her child-centered style of teaching (and passion for art, engineering and science) to help CFS campers, Lower and Middle Schoolers learn to explore and create.

Course: Food is something that everyone needs, so come and learn how to make creative, delicious, and fun food for holidays, birthdays, summer cookouts, or just hanging out around the house. Ice cube apple pies, cereal cheesecake, and three-ingredient dinners are only a few of the possible culinary ideas for you to make and enjoy. These creative creations will have your family asking you to cook and bake all the time!
Instructor: Jessica Bigelow is an elementary school teacher with the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School System. She has 12 years of teaching experience, spanning all grade levels, and has coordinated after school programs and provided summer school instruction. Jessica has a B.S. in Biology and Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and her teaching certification from Greensboro College. She enjoys spending time with her family, doing simple DIY projects, shopping, baking/cooking, traveling, and listening and dancing to music. Jessica will be returning to CFS summer camps for her third year!
Advanced Comic Design (9-15)

Course: For our older students, here’s an opportunity to enhance your skills in comic drawing. Led by Jamie Charles who has been teaching Comic Design in CFS Summer Programs for over 10 years, the workshop provides a meeting place for expanding skills and talents. You do NOT have to have taken Comic Design prior to this. This is for those students who want to work a bit intensely on their creations. Share your techniques, exchange tips, learn new skills, collaborate with a partner, and learn from the community.Instructor: Jamie Charles, a working illustrator, graduated from UNC-G in Fine Arts. Besides exhibiting his own work, Jamie works at CFS as an art instructor for Middle School students. He is also a champion Capture the Flag leader, having coached his workshop groups to many victories (not that he is bragging). Jamie offers private lessons in drawing and art.

The objective of Minecraft Community is to “get lost, together,” building community. With a little direction and a lot of improv, students will enter into Minecraft’s Survival Mode, banding together to outlive the Mobs and Elements, within a democratic community. With inventive jobs (e.g. Hunters, Explorers, Architects, Artisans, etc.) and responsibilities and a community lot-casting system, students will forge ahead to establish a lasting society amidst wiles of Mobs and the unforgiving wildernesses.

Instructor (Weeks 1, 3): Cedric Wright is incredibly passionate about all forms of Digital Media, but especially the ones that pertain to animation for film and gaming! His background is in graphic design, ministerial studies, and, most recently, education. After the close of a successful year at Hillside High School as a CTE teacher, Mr. Wright will return to the Summer Programs at the behest of his previously enjoyable and successful summer camps, and the promise of mangoes, ad infinitum!

Course: Got Game? Video that is! If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to make an enjoyable electronic game, Video Game Design I can help you "level up." Students are introduced to the concepts and techniques used in the video game industry. We’ll focus on the principles associated with good game design, emphasizing art, animation, and 2D graphics. You’ll come away knowing how to use the graphic software tools to create your own original art and animations to be used in your very own original video game. Yes, you can take this class more than once to develop your games further!
Instructor: Anthony Pierce received his B.S. in Information Technology with a concentration in Telecommunications and his M.Ed. from the University of Phoenix. He also completed teaching coursework through the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Anthony is currently teaching Technology Engineering and Design and Robotics I and II and coaching VEX Robotics at Hillside New Tech High School in Durham. Anthony, the 2017-2018 Teacher of the Year there, is an advocate for STEM in the schools.
Anthony was formerly employed as a network engineer by Cable and Wireless and by Verizon Business in Cary, North Carolina. With a colleague, he’s starting a business venture, Triangle Robotics Center.

Course: Ever wanted to learn how to write your name in frosting, dust cakes with chocolate powder patterns, create strawberry flowers, use fondant, and create fancy cupcakes and chocolate-dipped strawberries that look like tuxedos, or mold your own chocolate? It is an art form! We'll do all of that and more, starting with easy designs on cardboard before making our own frosting, cakes, cupcakes, and chocolates to decorate. Design your own theme or go wild with abandon and have fun creating edible works of art. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to accommodate dietary restrictions in this class.
Instructor: Karen Clark is a science teacher at Immaculata Catholic School in Durham. She teaches middle school, so enjoys working with other age groups during the summer. She has three wonderful kids and an overprotective mini schnauzer named Heidi that keep her active. In her spare time (yeah right) she enjoys playing the flute, reading mysteries, and doing puzzles.
Act It Out (10-14) | 1 space

Course: Lights, camera, action! Join us to learn the basics of script-based acting and perform in scenes! Students will learn improvisational games and other warm-ups, character development, vocal exercises, and other performance skills that will help them gain confidence on stage. On Monday, we'll choose several two- and three-person scenes and rehearse them throughout the week to prepare for a performance on Friday! No experience necessary.Instructor: Abby Kameny has been involved in Carolina Friends School Summer Programs for 13 years. She started out as a camper, then became a Counselor-In-Training, and later was hired to work in the Extended Day program. She is currently a linguistics major at the University of Maryland, College Park studying to be a teacher. She’s studied theatre for years and has participated in school plays, musicals, and a regional improvisational theatre team. In her free time, Abby enjoys singing, acting, and riding horses.

Program Session Days
ECO-GAMES
Through direct participation, students will be introduced to the world of outdoor environmental education through games and challenges, and will be encouraged to create their own eco-games in groups.
THE ROVING FIELD CENTRE
During this field trip to a local biological reserve, participants will discover how to survey the natural world through direct contact and observation. We’ll explore the power of optical equipment, and practice basic field methods that will enhance the student's animal and plant knowledge.
MAKE IT WILD WORKSHOP
Through a day of arts-based activities students will use their unique sense of creativity to explore the natural world. Have a go at natural printing, rope and model making, or field sketching. Whatever interests you artistically, there’s plenty of workshop time to explore your creative side.
MICRO-ADVENTURES
Students set out on a small local adventure designed to cultivate basic outdoor skills and a future sense of discovery and exploration. We’ll build an outdoor lunchtime camp and share food over some stories of outdoor adventures big and small.
ECO-CHALLENGE
Building from the ideas and examples represented during the week, students (in groups) will be asked to research, practice and present an engaging nature relevant presentation of their choice
Instructor: Mike Werndly (or Ranger to his friends) is a lifelong birder and practiced field biologist and outdoor educator with a passion for sharing environmental experiences that promote awareness and respect of the natural world. Working and travelling in remote areas around the globe has given Mike a wide knowledge of the Earth’s habitats and ecosystems. He’s been hooked on wildlife since a chance encounter with an owl when he was eight and hasn't looked back. He studied Ecology and Outdoor Environmental Education at university and has worked for numerous conservation organisations, including the Aigas Field Centre, Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, and Scottish Natural Heritage. Mike’s wildlife encounters have been numerous, but some memorable ones include being followed home one night by two otters and being covered head to foot in smelly seabird guano! He moved from Scotland in 2016 and now lives in Hillsborough with his wife and daughter, and their friendly food-crazy labrador, Fogo :0)
Sports Action: Soccer from CFS to the World Cup (10-15)

The clinic is for children who like to be active and ideally have played at least a little soccer before. We will work out every day up to four hours on the soccer field (with breaks for food, water…). Please bring a water bottle, light-colored clothes, soccer shoes (if possible), and enthusiasm!
Instructor: Jochen Wachter is a father of two CFS students (Middle and Upper School) and a soccer coach at CFS since 2016. After getting married in Germany in 1997, Jochen and his wife Lizzette moved to Chapel Hill. He teaches high school German and Latin in Wake County.
After playing soccer for almost 25 years in Germany, Jochen started coaching at Sanderson High School in Raleigh, where he coached JV boys and girls for 15 years. He also coaches soccer at the YMCA, Rainbow, and Triangle United levels, trying to spread his enthusiasm for the “beautiful game."
Leadership Challenge (12-15)

Course: What makes you a more effective leader and team player? Let us show you some tools. Using group building games, art, theater, movement, discussion, and individual reflection we learn and practice leadership techniques. We will work as individuals and as a group to enhance confidence, cooperation, and communication. The workshop is an excellent exercise in developing leadership skills for jobs and community roles. If you're interested in being a counselor-in-training in CFS Summer Programs this year or next, this course is a prerequisite. We work through some basic “how to deal with” situations, focusing on conflict resolution and effective ways of listening and responding. And no, we do not sit in chairs throughout the day listening to lectures! This is an active course culminating in a "shadow day" as a CIT and a certificate of successful leadership training completion. We’ve had over 200 students pass through this program in recent years!
Instructor: CJ Suitt is a poet and facilitator working to elevate youth and their collective voices through spoken word poetry. He is co-founder of the Sacrificial Poets, a youth organization that works to create safe spaces for young people to empower themselves through the sharing of their stories. Through this work he has had the opportunity to teach and perform at many festivals and programs across the country, including Bonnaroo and The Mosaic Project and The Alan Blueford Center for Social Justice in Oakland, California. CJ is dedicated to being a creative catalyst for the highest potential of a dynamic generation not afraid to speak truth to power. In Fall 2017, he was the keynote speaker for the Triangle Diversity Alliance Conference hosted at CFS, and now also works in our Lower School Extended Day (AfterHours) program.
Summer Film Apprenticeship (13-18)

Are you ready to take film to the next level? In this unique opportunity, you will get to propose a screenplay, become part of a film crew, and direct actors. You will learn to block, light, direct and shoot scenes. On day one we will look at your screenplay ideas and work on our pitches. We’ll learn to craft story and consider the logistics of how to make it happen. The instructor will also provide his own screenplay as on option which the students can choose to explore. Either way, everyone will get hands-on experience in producing a film and being part of a crew--make screen magic happen!
You might find Summer Film Studio Week 1 (June 18-22) a fun and useful accompaniment to Summer Film Apprenticeship.
Instructor: Ahmed F. Selim joined the CFS Upper School as Language Arts Teacher in 2017, but taught previously with the School as a guest teacher and led the first Summer Programs Film Studio. He is an Egyptian-American educator and filmmaker now based in North Carolina. Before his return to the Triangle, Ahmed spent 15 years teaching and filming in the Middle East. He has a keen interest in using documentary projects to bridge the East-West divide by using film to “turn conflict into discovery.” To that aim, he founded FiLMS for World Peace, where he partners with nonprofits, educational institutions, and social justice activists to empower the will for change. Ahmed has also taught courses at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University.
