A Pre-K to Grade 12 Independent Quaker Day School Serving the Greater Durham-Chapel Hill Area

Extended Day

Before and After-Care

We have Extended Day for children needing care before and/or after the 9:00 am to 3:00 pm Summer Programs course period each day, Monday through Friday.

Extended Day is divided into two approximate age-based groups in large athletic/PE facilities: the Quaker Dome and the Gym.

Indoor (air conditioned!) and outdoor activities are available to students. Extended Day is supervised by an adult leader with college/high school assistants, with board games, physical activities, and the opportunity for reading or other individual time. Our supervisor to student ratio is about 1:8.

The fee for Extended Day is a separate charge from course tuition.

You may add Extended Day at any time, ideally with at least one week notice.

Please note that there will be a $5 late fee assessed for every five (5) minutes beyond the registered Extended Day period. Thank you for picking up on time--it's very helpful to our staff. If you prefer not to pay on site, we'll gladly bill you.

You may enroll in Extended Day during or after registration for courses using our CampInTouch system. Registration opens several days after we release our schedule the week of January 13.

What do we do in Extended Day?

Each age group has a sign-in sheet with a roster for that week. Please sign in and out!

Morning

Ages 4-8 meet in the Quaker Dome. Students in a session at our Campus Early School will be escorted there from the Quaker Dome in time for the 9:00 am start. Other students will remain in the Quaker Dome for our daily all-program Morning Meeting.

Ages 9+ generally meet in the Gym area. At 8:55 am, Extended Day staff escort Gym students to the Quaker Dome for our daily all-program Morning Meeting.

Because everyone arrives at a different time, the activities are more low-key: card games, board games, coloring, LEGOS, toys, etc. (for the younger campers).

Our morning staff includes high school and college-age assistants.

Afternoon

Ages 4-5 students in our Campus Early School programs are escorted to the Quaker Dome by the Intern who's been their TA during the day and who helps supervise them in Extended Care.

Ages 5-8 students (other than those in a session at our Campus Early School) are escorted to the Quaker Dome. They can play indoors or outdoors with supervision:
  • Outdoors there are basketball courts, soccer fields, slides, swings, and more.
  • Indoor activities may involve dancing to music, reading (and being read to), board games, and craft activities.

Ages 9-18 meet in the Gym area. There are many spaces for students to play...

  • the foyer for games, craft activities, ping pong, cards, and reading
  • gym for basketball, spider ball, and other indoor games and activities
  • gym patio for four-square and water games and soccer field for running or playing frisbee.

Snack is served between 4:15 and 4:30 pm, always a big event of the afternoon! We serve freshly popped popcorn, quesadillas, cheese and crackers, watermelon, bagels and cream cheese, and fruit (we try to watch out for our peanut allergies). Occasionally we have cooking classes that want to provide a snack for the group (that's always a treat!).

Our afternoon staff consists of our Extended Day Coordinator and several college and/or high school age assistants (with lots of stamina!).

PLEASE NOTE: If your student has a food allergy and cannot eat a snack being offered, thank you for packing additional snacks in the lunch box/bag for Extended Day. Be sure to indicate on your medical permission form that your child cannot eat certain foods so the staff are aware. However, we have to rely on you to provide an alternative snack. Thank you!
