A Pre-K to Grade 12 Independent Quaker Day School Serving the Greater Durham-Chapel Hill Area

Assessment

Evaluation is a crucial element in any school, and it is an element to which much time, thought, and care is given in the Middle School.

Students receive narrative reports for each of their classes with detailed information regarding areas of strength and growth. This feedback to students and parents provides a rich understanding beyond that of a simple letter or number grade. This system directs students towards those strengths of which they can be proud, and alerts the students to weaknesses on which they should focus time and attention. The evaluation addresses a student's attitude, productivity, contributions, and special achievements.

Two parent-teacher conferences are scheduled during the school year, and additional conferences can be scheduled at any time.

A year-end report, written by the student's advisor, is sent home in June.

Exploring scientific curiosity

A highlight every year, Science Day gives us a chance to revel in the myriad ways science enters our curriculum. Guest judges evaluate second year students’ science fair projects. All students take workshops of their choice with dozens of visiting experts, on topics including DNA extraction, forensics, gravity, and rocket science. An invited keynote speaker kicks things off with an action-packed opening presentation.
