This course is offered in multiple weeks:
Week One / June 20-24, Achiri Acha
Week Three / July 19-23, , Achiri Acha
Week Seven / Aug 9-13, Achiri Acha
Week Nine / Aug 15-19, Achiri Acha
Tuition: 365
Course: Anyone ever told you to “get lost?” If so, there’s no better way to take their advice than to delve into the amazingly expansive and immersive world of Minecraft. For a moment, let’s step away from the term “video-game” and substitute “wildly-versatile-open-ended-world-manipulating-art machine.” Minecraft’s critically acclaimed, sandbox-style gameplay is a constant exercise in collaborative exploration, goal-setting, and boundless “Imagineering”—whether hunting and gathering to build agrarian homesteads across various landscapes or configuring an automated railway/refinement system that acquires, transports, and processes raw materials the player can use to create their own scaled recreation of the Taj Mahal.
The objective of Minecraft Community is to “get lost, together,” building community. With a little direction and a lot of improv, students will enter into Minecraft’s Survival Mode, banding together to outlive the Mobs and Elements, within a democratic community. With inventive jobs (e.g. Hunters, Explorers, Architects, Artisans, etc.) and responsibilities and a community lot-casting system, students will forge ahead to establish a lasting society amidst wiles of Mobs and the unforgiving wildernesses.
We will be using Minecraft: Education Edition on Chromebooks.
Instructor: Achiri Acha has been at CFS since he was six years old! He mentored with Jordan Shamp in Sports camp, became a Counselor-In-Training, and then moved on to become a camp assistant and instructor for the past seven summers. Achiri has worked in Extended Day at Lerner School and School’s Out Camps at the Jewish Community Center and currently works at USA Ninja Challenge during the school year. Achiri's goal is to be an elementary school physical education instructor and coach.

Instructor: Larissa Wood joined Carolina Friends School in 2021 to teach Ceramics, Environmental Science, and Geology. She has also taught science at Northwood High School in Chatham County and art summer camps at the Arts Center in Carrboro. She received her B.A. in Biology from UNC Chapel Hill in 2018, where she also pursued a North Carolina teaching licensure and a creative writing minor. We’ll introduce “game of the scene,” long-form improvisation, and build on skills for developing character and relationships. Of course, we will end the week with a show on Friday!
Some experience recommended (either Improv 101 or another improv class/camp).
Instructor: Abby Kameny has been involved in Carolina Friends School Summer Programs for 18 years. She started out as a camper, served as a Counselor-In-Training, was hired to work in the Extended Day program, and then became an instructor! Course: Can’t get enough of sports? We totally understand. This week will focus on football, fu’tbol… you know, soccer! We focus on technique, skill development, and teamwork. All activities take place on our outdoor playing fields (using cooler morning temperatures) and in our two air-conditioned gym facilities. We will be working on improving footwork, ball control, field awareness and scrimmaging strategies. Sports experience is not necessary. Our goal is for you to learn how to play so you’ll feel comfortable knowing the rules, understanding the strategy, and practicing good teamwork. We're here to help you improve your game and have fun. As the great Pele’ said, Soccer is “The Beautiful Game”.
Instructor: Jochen Wachter is a sports enthusiast. He has coached soccer for the past 20 years in different places - high schools (CFS and Sanderson High in Raleigh), a middle school (CFS), Rainbow Soccer, Triangle United, and even at the Y. He is more interested in coaching than in trophies and great successes. For him, success is when players get the main idea: sports are fun, team sports can be art, and team sports teach you for life.
When Jochen is not coaching soccer, he teaches German and Latin at Sanderson High School in Raleigh or spends time with his family. His son, a junior at CFS, takes part in the soccer and the basketball teams here. He loves to watch the games and therefore spends a lot of time on campus. Jochen’s daughter graduated two years ago. Coaching her in her younger years and then watching her compete in many school games in basketball, soccer, and tennis has been a big part of his past 15 years. On top of this Jochen likes to travel with his wife and kids, often visiting Germany and France or spending time at the beaches and lakes of North Carolina.
Weave it Wild (10-15)
Tuition: 335
Course: Calling all artists, makers, and outdoor adventurers! We'll each build a rigid heddle backstrap loom (in use today around the world and probably as old as weaving itself). Then, we'll learn about animal anatomy in art. That’ll help us weave small 3D animal creatures--to which we'll explore how to add light-up eyeballs. Let your creativity run wild!
Instructor: Jan French is a fiber artist and weaving educator/advocate, demonstrator, and collaborator weaving on location at schools, arts councils, museums, festivals, and Scrap Exchange events. She is a member of the Triangle Weavers Guild’s Education Committee and has instructed hundreds of folks of all ages how to build and weave delightful and useful items on a simple handmade loom.
Before coming to CFS in 2008, Jan worked in environmental and open space planning and lived for two years in Geneva, Switzerland. She has Masters degrees in Environmental Management from Duke University and in Landscape Architecture from North Carolina State University’s School of Design.
At CFS Jan has served students as Middle School substitute teacher, art project coordinator for three Martin Luther, King, Jr. Day celebrations, Science Day guest speaker, and Extended Day (AfterHours) staff. She’s also a former CFS parent!

Unfortunately, dietary restrictions and allergies may not be able to be accommodated in this particular camp. If you have questions about possible accommodation possibilities, please feel free to email ExtendedLearning@cfsnc.org before signing up.

She began working in Summer Programs in 2018 as the Extended Day Coordinator, then in 2019 as the Assistant Director, and in 2020 and 2021 as the full-time Summer Programs Coordinator. Ruthie loves Summer Programs, and she’s excited to return this year as an Instructor. She has her degree in education and public policy from UNC Chapel Hill, has earned her Early Childhood Education accreditation, has worked as a math teacher in the CFS Middle School, and has worked with Peaceful Schools NC, a CFS-based non-profit focused on Restorative Practices in education.
Ruthie is half of Pain & Panic, where she collaborates with a friend to create original clothing and accessories she sells in local art markets. She’s also the founder of the “Triangle Tennis Alliance,” a local group for queer tennis players and loves to play with them every week. Ruthie has also directed many plays and musicals, including with local children’s theaters. She looks forward to another awesome summer with CFS!

And let's not forget dice rolling!
Students will build characters, play through adventures, and study the fundamentals of role-playing game design to discover what makes the best D&D sessions so memorable. Whether you're a newcomer to the game or an avid fan, there's a place at the table for you!
Instructor: Christa Gann joined CFS in 2018 as a Physics and Computer Science instructor. She graduated with a B.S. from Berry College in 2002, double-majoring in Physics and Mathematics and earning a minor in Computer Science. Christa then moved to North Carolina, studying mathematics at UNC-Chapel Hill. In 2004, Christa completed her M.S. in Differential Geometry. For 12 years prior to joining CFS, she was an instructor of mathematics at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham. She is also a National Board certified teacher.
Christa has a passion for teaching physics, mathematics, and programming, but also enjoys hiking and running with her (very large) dog, Odin, spending time with her two children, and geeking out over sci-fi and fantasy themed pastimes such as Magic the Gathering and Dungeons and Dragons. Christa is a life-long learner who loves to share curious facts and interesting questions with anyone who wants to listen. She endeavors to learn something new everyday.
