Course: X marks the spot! Join us for a fun week of hunting for treasures. Read maps, solve clues, and decode ciphers to solve daily challenges. Not only will we be participating in treasure and scavenger hunts, students will also have the opportunity to make their own treasures, treasure chests, maps, and scavenger hunts!

Instructor: Adam Ramsey is a North Carolina native who grew up in Roxboro and moved to Chapel Hill to study psychology and creative writing at UNC. Adam is passionate about working with youth, and especially enjoys helping young people make connections to nature, service, and creative expression. Last summer, he led youth hiking and service trips in the Berkshires. The summer was spent camping, working on community service projects, and sharing lots of riddles and jokes!

Adam is super excited to be working at CFS and can’t wait to share his love of nature, music, and riddles with all of the Summer Programs students.

Course: Have you ever spent a Saturday afternoon pushing around your bedroom furniture until things felt fresh and new? Have you ever sketched up the most perfect example of a bunk bed that can shape shift into an indoor tree house? Do you ever help your younger brother clean up his bedroom and then gather your family in front of the closed door in preparation for the BIG REVEAL? If so, then Dazzling Design is just the place for you!

In this one week design camp, we'll sketch living spaces, create mood boards, construct 3D models, learn several formal design and decor principles, and even compete in bite-sized interior design challenges! Each day will bring a fresh perspective on interior design and interior decorating, and we'll round off the week with a grand finale where you'll work with a surprise client to help them redesign one of their own rooms!

Instructor: Marissa is a Durham native who was a passionate young designer herself as a child. She attended Riverside High School and graduated from the Interior Design Career Pathway program, at which point she headed to the Blue Ridge Mountains to attend Appalachian State University. At ASU, Marissa embarked on another lifelong passion: studying education and educator development. She earned her B.S. and M.A. in Elementary Education before returning to Durham with her husband. They purchased an all-blue house (inside and outside) and started renovating it while she was working full time as a science teacher.

Marissa is currently an educator at Discovery Charter School, and returns home each evening to a home that (after many hours of labor) is no longer blue in each of the rooms! Although her personal home renovations are nearing completion for the foreseeable future, she is continuing to share her interior design skills by founding Pen & Paper Design Co., an interior design consulting company. When she's not teaching science or splattered in a bit of paint, Marissa enjoys gardening, reading, swimming in the Eno River, playing board games, and spending time with her husband and their two- year-old bearded dragon, Ginny.

Course: Loosely based on the popular meme (and a hit baking competition show), this class will explore delicious disasters, fantastic fiascos, and marvelous messes. Students will attempt to recreate picture-perfect crafts or detailed dessert decor that far exceeds the skill level of the average person. At the end of each day, teams will proudly pose with their creative creations and declare they have indeed "Nailed It!"

Instructor: Kristina Krzywonos is the Upper School Chemistry Teacher and Advisor at Carolina Friends School. She has a B.S. in Chemistry from High Point University. Over the last 10 years, she has taught science of all sorts to middle and upper school students, coached Odyssey of the Mind, and initiated ways to support students expressing their knowledge of science creatively. In this course, she hopes to capture her inner Ms. Frizzle by encouraging students to "Take chances. Make mistakes. Get messy!

Course: Addicted to comics? Doodle in class? Come create your own comic book characters and stories. Bring creativity, imagination, and motivation along with your pencil. Exchange ideas, receive input, and work on technique with a professional artist. Please have pencils, color pencils, erasers, and favorite drawing pens.

Instructor: Jamie Charles, a working illustrator, graduated from UNC-G in Fine Arts. Besides exhibiting his own work, Jamie works at CFS as an art instructor for Middle School students. He is also a champion Capture the Flag leader, having coached his workshop groups to many victories (not that he is bragging). Jamie offers private lessons in drawing and art.

Course: Learn the science behind solving crimes as we explore some of the tools and methods used in forensic science. Physical evidence left behind at a crime scene (such as fingerprints, hair, fibers, and DNA) can provide valuable evidence linking a suspect to a crime and telling the story of the crime. Through discussion, virtual labs, and case studies, we will explore how crime scene investigators collect and evaluate evidence. With this expertise, students will complete the week by working together to solve a crime scenario.

Instructor: John Bray currently teaches middle school science at Discovery Charter School in Durham and has previously taught high school biology, physical science, and chemistry. He graduated from Appalachian State University with B.S. degrees in both Ecology and Biology Education and from North Carolina State University with an M.Ed. in Stem Education. While at App State, John worked in a freshwater conservation ecology lab where he surveyed crayfish populations along the Blue Ridge Parkway and sequenced the DNA of freshwater mussels. After spending three summers at Camp Riverlea--as the tennis counselor for two years and the agriculture counselor for one--this will be John’s third year working at CFS.

Course: Celebrate your love of all things Harry Potter as you create themed crafts, do wizard things, and whip up tasty snacks. During camp you will be sorted into a house so that you can mix and mingle with Gryffindors, Slytherins, Hufflepuffs, and Ravenclaws. Then, you'll spend your time immersing yourself into the world of Harry by making memorabilia and creating memories that you can enjoy for years to come. Activities include creating your own wand and mini Monster Book. You will also attend charms, spells, and"potions"classes.

Previous knowledge of the Harry Potter series is helpful when participating in this course.

Instructor: Cyrise Davis holds a B.A. in Art Education K-12 and a B.S. in Commercial Art and Photography. In addition to her freelance photography, she worked 10 years as an art and photography teacher at The Hawbridge School in Saxapahaw, as a site coordinator and lead teacher for a middle school after-hours program, and as a YMCA summer camp counselor.

Five years ago Cyrise joined the CFS family as the Extended Day (AfterHours) Director, substitute teacher, and Summer Programs instructor. Cyrise employs her child-centered style of teaching (and passion for art, engineering and science) to help CFS summer students and Lower and Middle Schoolers learn to explore and create.

Course: Each hour section will highlight a new wacky animal that we will learn about. We'll explore various art mediums - watercolor, acrylic paint, marker, graphite, ink, collage etc - as we learn how to artistically depict each wacky animal we learn about!

Instructor: Nicole grew up in southeast coastal Georgia and attended Young Harris College in the North Georgia mountains, where they got their B.F.A. in Studio Arts (minor in Philosophy and Religious Studies). After receiving their degree, they worked corporate level jobs in the art field (working in graphic design for a marketing agency in Blue Ridge, Georgia, managing an art studio in Raleigh, etc). This past year, Nicole has found their way back to the fine arts and now works full-time as an artist in their studio in Raleigh. They look forward to instilling and inspiring an artistic nature in this summer’s young artists.

Course: Calling all Pokémon trainers who just gotta catch ‘em all! Come enjoy a weeklong exploration and appreciation of the world of Pokémon. In this course, we’ll dive into the Pokémon Trading Card Game to learn how the game is played, understand different cards’ values, and improve strategy.

During the week of fun, we will learn how to make Pokémon decks as well as how to become better Pokémon trainers. By the end of the session, everyone will be well on their way to becoming a Pokémon master. All levels of experience with the Pokémon Trading Card Game are welcome.

Students will need to download the free Pokemon Trading Card Game Online onto a computer in order to participate in the activities there (this works best on a desktop computer or laptop, but can also work on a tablet). On the first day we will help students download and navigate the program, including how to set up the proper privacy settings.

During the week, we will also spend some of our time on Zoom discussing strategies and cards, and some of our time will be spent playing against each other in the online game. Come join us for some digital Pokémon fun!

Co-Instructor: Owen Bauer-Lepofsky has been at CFS for 11 years, starting in Campus Early School, and is now rising to 10th grade in the fall. He has created and led LEGO camps for 4-8 years olds, helped at his mother’s preschool, and served as a Teaching Assistant for several years in the CFS dance program.

He is an avid Pokémon Trading Card Game player, and earned his invitation to the 2019 and 2020 World Championships during his first two seasons of competitive play. Owen created and has co-led the Pokémon camp in CFS' Summer Programs since its inception in 2019. He'll be leading a six-week Lower School Pokémon enrichment class in March and April.

Co-Instructor: Jon Lepofsky is a current CFS parent and former CFS staff member. He has been an educator for over 20 years, including time as a CFS Summer Programs instructor. He also founded and served as the Academic Director of the Duke Neuro Camp through Duke University’s Youth Programs. Jon has a Ph.D. in Geography from UNC, where he now teaches.

Originally from the Boston area, Jon enjoys cheering on the Red Sox (as well as his adopted Durham Bulls), spending time with his kids while driving them to Pokémon competitions, and reading. Jon has co-led the Pokémon camp in CFS’ Summer Programs since its inception in 2019.

Course: In this class, campers will learn the ins and outs of producing digital content using Tik Tok, YouTube, and Canva. Throughout the week, students will master the art of short form digital story telling while flexing their creative muscles. Who knows, they might even go viral!

Instructor: Phil Riddick is an educator, musician, and artist from Norfolk, Virginia. After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Phil moved to Houston, Texas where he currently teaches social studies.

His entire life, Phil has been immersed in the beauty of creativity. With more than a decade of musical experience, Phil believes music and its creation to be the life force of humanity.

As the former assistant director of Norfolk Summer Leadership Camp, Phil comes with a passion for youth leadership development, believing it to be crucial for long term personal success and for the strengthening of global society.

In his spare time, Phil enjoys completing his GoodReads challenge with his local book club, teaching piano, baking pies, and devouring YouTube content

Calling all designers! Project Runway: CFS Edition is a highly interactive fashion design course delivered through a mix of fashion history, psychology of dress, identifying trends in pop culture, and visual analysis of fashion. Students will learn how to think critically about the choices they make in regards to what they wear every day and the significance of fashion in our world. Each day we will explore a different theme as it pertains to fashion, including fashion as a form of expression, a way to protest, the sustainability issues of fashion, and fashion as art.

Students will compete in daily fashion design challenges, creating “looks” to go with each day’s theme using 2D and 3D media. By the end of the week, participants will have created a Capstone Wardrobe Journal, a protest tote bag, a look for a “Trashion Show” using recycled materials, a Mood Board Collage, and a Final Collection representing everything they have learned over the course of the week.

No fashion design or sewing experience required. This course will be focused on design, not the technical sewing aspects of fashion. Just bring your own sense of style and… Make it Work!

Instructor: Connor Kirkpatrick (he/him/his) is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.A. in English and Nonprofit Leadership and Management. He is a nonprofit professional, working at Student U as an Advancement Writing Associate. He is also a practicing educator and acts as a Family Head, coaching first-generation students academically in Student U’s Year Round Programming.

As a guiding principle, Connor believes that young people are our most powerful asset to our community with the capacity to contribute to real world issues, and much of his experience is in empowering young people through engaging activities to find their passion and create their own service projects to meet genuine community needs. When not breaking down a dance move or running half marathons, you can find Connor wrapped up in a good mystery novel.

Course: Little Miss Flint: age 8. Greta Thunberg: age 15. Martin Luther King, Jr.: age 25.

Are you ready to change our world? Little Miss Flint was only eight years old when she sent a letter to President Barack Obama to shed light on the Flint Michigan water crisis. Greta Thunberg was only 15 when she began standing outside of the Swedish parliament to demand stronger action on climate change. Martin Luther King, Jr. was only 25 years old when he began leading the southern fight against segregation. They weren’t necessarily old enough to drive or vote, and yet they inspired national and international social change as minors. And you will too!

You can make an impact on your community and our world. Through a lens of social justice we will explore what it means to be advocates for all people regardless of identity. We will dive deep into leadership, and learn how you can grow as an agent of change in your community. We will explore the social movements making big strides in our world today - from Black Lives Matter, to the Women's Movement, the LGBTQ+ Movement, the Environmental Movement, and more!

This class is perfect for anyone who loves history and community-building, or is ready to make this world safer and more inclusive for all people! Our work will include exploring various forms of activism that suits all personality types, from speech making to writing petitions and letters to local officials.

Instructor: Michelle Brown is a freedom fighter currently volunteering with Black Youth Project 100 Durham as a member of the Communications Committee. Anyone who knows Michelle will tell you that she LOVES social justice organizing! Other than dancing, there are few things that she enjoys more than helping to unite a community around a cause for positive and healing change, and she’s excited to share her love for social change with you all! Michelle is also passionate about her work with children and youth as a full-time caregiver.

While studying Women’s and Gender Studies and Hispanic Literature and Culture at UNC before graduating in 2018, Michelle took an active role in many social justice-oriented groups, including the movement for the removal of the Confederate monument from UNC’s campus, where she learned that youth are and always have been leaders of positive social change. She was also an organizer for the Catalyst Conference, a program that brought high school students to UNC to learn about activism and grow as agents of change in their own communities. Students left the conference feeling empowered and equipped to change the world-- and Michelle plans to bring the same change-making energy to CFS Summer Programs!

Course: Shh! This not-so-secret society is exclusive to only living people. No dead poets allowed!

Inspired by the 1989 Robin Williams movie The Dead Poets Society, where teens ran a secret society to read a lot of old, dead people poetry (yuck), the Living Poets Society course at CFS believes that some of the most powerful language in the world has yet to be written, but it also lies within you, potential camper.

Ever heard a string of words that really just made you stop and think for a moment because it was so beautiful? For me, I love poetry because it is beautiful, and anyone can write it! So now I want to invite you, young person, to come write and share your poetry. In this mini Master-Class, we’ll study the elements of poetry, write poems, read our poems to each other in a workshop style, and discuss our poetry together. We will watch spoken word poetry and talk about what makes poetry so, so awesome, and what strategies you can use to elevate your poetry (or maybe just how to write your first poem).

Whether you’re an aspiring writer, the biggest fan of poetry in your ELA class, or just someone who wants to try something new and find out what it’s like to be a member of a semi-secret society, we’re going to have a blast as we create our own virtual Poetry Slam. *Snaps Enthusiastically*

Course: Has anyone ever told you not to play with your food? Permission granted! Your imagination paired with simple recipes will result in edible art--critters and creatures, signs and scenes. How would you turn a pear into a hedgehog? You will grant new identities to the shapes and colors of ordinary foods. Then if you can bear parting with your art, you can gobble it up or serve your creations to family. We’ll also fashion some artwork with various kitchen-related items and themes. Dazzle with a drizzle. You are the chef with a flair!

Instructor: Kathleen Rogers loves to understand the hows and whys of our world and enjoys fostering excitement in others about science and nature. Science is a key to so much cool stuff! She studied chemistry and molecular biology at Lynchburg College, UNC-Chapel Hill, and Duke, earning a Ph.D. in cell biology.

Kathleen has worked at CFS for over 12 years as a substitute teacher, tutor and Summer Programs instructor and loves being around the energy and creativity of kids. She is quite happy when hiking, birdwatching, and gardening and is currently working towards obtaining a Master Gardener certificate. She plans to engage in educational outreach about ecosystems, plant biology and sustainable gardening for all ages—hoping to pass on her passion for understanding our role in nature.

Course: A class structured for playful exploration through yoga and developing body awareness, mindfulness and breath... with fun sprinkled in, too! Newbies and practiced yogis are all welcome.

Instructor: Olivia Allen is a Registered Yoga Teacher recognized by Yoga Alliance. She is a kids yoga and wellness teacher in an After School Program in California and teaches adult yoga classes regularly in local studios. Olivia is experienced in working with all age groups and holds a B.S. degree in Health and Wellness Promotion from the University of North Carolina Asheville.

I am passionate about working with kids to help them tune into their own body awareness, appreciation, and love for themselves.

Course: Many of us are “stuck at home” this summer, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still travel around the world virtually! Let’s go to Egypt and learn about the pyramids, or to the Taj Mahal in India. Then, let’s hit Europe and visit London (Big Ben) and on to Paris to “see” the Eiffel Tower. In this Polly’s Picasso’s class, we will learn about different famous world landmarks and then draw them using different art mediums (watercolor, markers, crayons, etc). Come join me on this artistic trip around the world!

Instructor: Polly Clark grew up in California and then traveled cross-country to Connecticut College, where she got her B.A. in English. Following that, she got her M.A. in Counseling Psychology at Santa Clara University, but after 9/11, reevaluated her career goals and decided to pursue what she had always wanted to do, which was teach! She earned her teaching credential and then taught for 14 years as a third grade teacher at Jensen Elementary School in Castro Valley, California.

In 2018, with her three kids starting their own journeys into adulthood, Polly and her husband, Kevin, decided to leave the increasingly frenetic pace of the Bay Area and move to beautiful Chapel Hill. She taught 4th grade for one year at Carrboro Elementary School and then moved to Carolina Friends School this past year, where she is a teacher and advisor in the Middle School.

Course: Math, mental discipline, and subject knowledge are necessary for success in any card game. In this course we will work on all three with an emphasis on how we can use statistical analysis to improve our skills at the popular card game "Magic the Gathering." We will learn why and how math is important in card games, formulas that will help us succeed, how to use online calculators and tools to assist us, and, of course, we’ll play lots and lots of Magic. Get ready for a week of learning, collaboration, and intense competition!

Instructor: Achiri Acha has been at CFS since he was six years old! He mentored with Jordan Shamp in Sports camp, became a counselor-in-training, and then moved on to become a camp assistant and instructor for the past seven summers. Achiri has worked in Extended Day at Lerner School and School’s Out Camps at the Jewish Community Center and currently works at USA Ninja Challenge during the school year. Achiri's goal is to be an elementary school physical education instructor and coach.
