Course: Join us on our camping trip around our school’s beautiful campus. We will use our imagination to explore rivers, climb mountains, tell stories around blazing campfires, and more! If you love the experience of going on a super fun getaway to the outdoors, this is the camp for you.
Instructor: Dan Hill is an early school support teacher at CFS who holds a B.S. in mathematics as well as a B.A. in creative writing. They have worked in education as a tutor in various subjects for learners ages 4-35, taught high school math, and now have found a calling for working in early education.
They spend their free time crocheting, learning about skin care, and making spreadsheets for fun!
Enchanted Fairy Gardens (6-9) | Waitlist

Course: Come and learn about the magical world of fairies! We’ll learn about fairies and make our own fairy gardens, wands, and fairy trinkets to welcome our enchanted friends! Create special treats, potions, and crafts to add to our fairy collection. Enjoy tea parties in the fairy garden and read stories about fairies and their garden friends!
Instructor: Shannon Neu joined the CFS Summer Programs staff in 2021 and is excited to be back for another fun summer! She earned her Bachelor of Music in Music Education from UNC-Greensboro in 2016 and has been a music teacher in the Wake County Public School System ever since. For fun, Shannon plays the oboe in the Raleigh Civic Symphony Orchestra and enjoys reading, hiking, gardening, and cooking. She lives in Raleigh with her husband (Logan), her two cats (Jasper and Ruby), and a lot of plants.

Course: LEGO camp is just around “the block!” We will have a fun-filled week of building with our extensive LEGO sets. Students are invited to create structures, vehicles, animals, cities, and fantastical scenes while they explore the fundamental principles of engineering! New sets appear each year–from Minecraft and Ninjago to Star Wars and the LEGO movie. Come dive into thousands of LEGO blocks and see where the adventure takes us!
Instructor: Jenna Carlson joined CFS this school year as a Fountain Purple teacher. During the school year, she loves working with the 3rd and 4th years. But in the summer, she is a crafter extraordinaire! Jewelry making, cricut projects, coloring…you name it. She also loves all things Disney and Star Wars. If you’re looking for a fun, laid back camp where you can express yourself in different ways, then these camps are just for you!
Trash to Treasure (6-9) | Waitlist

Course: Explore how art can help protect the planet! In this camp, we will transform discarded materials (bottle caps, paper tubes, plastic cups, etc.) into unique sculptures, collages, and mixed media artworks while learning about the importance of reducing waste. Together, we’ll find creative ways to turn “trash” into “treasure” and make art which conveys a message about protecting the environment.
Instructor: Dana Palmer is an art teacher and visual artist from Durham, NC. She holds a BFA in Art Education (K-12) and an MA in Special Education, both from Appalachian State University. Dana is passionate about nurturing growth mindsets in her classroom and helping students discover their unique strengths through artmaking. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time in nature and being with her friends and family.

Course: Take a virtual trip around the world as we explore a different country each day! We will find our destination on the globe, acquaint ourselves with our setting through pictures and videos, and then explore the culture through music, stories, games, crafts, and some tasty snacks. Let’s see how big - and small - our world is!
Instructor: Michael Oggiani is originally from Berkshire County in Western Massachusetts. He graduated from Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, Vermont in 2018. He later went on to earn a master’s degree in Elementary Education from Westfield State University in Westfield, Massachusetts in 2022. Michael is of the belief that all children are naturally adventurous, open-minded, and inquisitive, and that it is the job of the teacher to help nourish and strengthen those qualities. Michael enjoys the creative side of teaching and strives to make sure the learning environment in his classroom is a student-centered one that promotes student self-sufficiency and creativity. When not in the classroom, Michael enjoys hiking, cycling, watching movies, and cheering for the Boston Bruins, Boston Celtics, and Green Bay Packers.

Course: It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a... Frisbee! Ultimate Frisbee is one of the fastest growing youth sports in the US, and we want to teach you how to play! Ultimate combines the continuous play of soccer, the end-zones of football, and the pivoting of basketball all with a frisbee to create a fast-paced, exciting game! This camp will teach the fundamentals of the sport, going over different types of throws and the basic strategies of offense and defense. Participants will learn about Spirit of the Game, a fundamental part of Ultimate that focuses on sportsmanship and respect for all players. Each camper will receive an Ultimate Frisbee disc with registration!
Instructor: Triangle Ultimate is a local nonprofit whose mission is to collaboratively build a community emphasizing accessibility, relationships, and engagement through learning, playing, and teaching the sport of Ultimate in the Triangle region of North Carolina. Triangle Ultimate is excited to strengthen our relationship with the Carolina Friends School community through great summer camp experiences. The camp will be led by some of the top leaders in the Triangle's Ultimate Frisbee community!

Course: The spotlight is on you! Calling all actors, technical designers, and directors to help us put on a play! In this two-week theater camp we will write and stage an original play. In the first week we will develop acting skills, play theater games, do warm ups, and practice vocal and movement exercises. We will also create characters and write our play. In the second week, we will design props, sets, costumes, and make-up, all while perfecting our roles. Then we will invite family, friends, and other campers to attend a special performance on Thursday evening and Friday morning.
Instructor: Susan Kincaid began teaching at CFS Summer Programs in 1992! Besides being a writer, playwright, and actress, Susan headed the theater program in the Upper School at Carolina Friends for twenty years, directing and producing plays two times a year. In the fall of 2023, she had the pleasure of directing the Upper School production of “Radium Girls.” Collaborating with younger students as well over the years has been a real joy for Susan. She is eager to meet a new generation of young artists this summer.

Course: Time to make your dinner experience complete! Join us as we learn how to make delicious cookies that will become lifelong favorites! We’ll get into the kitchen and start with some simple recipes, then do some research to find more unusual or enticing ones, then put on our aprons, get out the oven mitts, locate the mixing bowls, and get started. YUMMMMM! Students are asked to wear full foot coverings (so, no sandals or flip-flops).
Instructor: Tom Latimer has been running camps at CFS for 17 years. He has been teaching for 30 years and has a Masters degree in elementary education. He currently teaches 2nd grade at Immaculata Catholic School in Durham and plays guitar in Chapel Hill band Zoltar’s Fortune.
Tom lives in Chapel Hill with his wife Alison and their two cats Nora and Lionel. He enjoys seeing and playing music, eating at our local restaurants, collecting vinyl records, and working with kids.

Course: Codemoji’s Code It program’s mission is simple: teach students to enjoy all things related to coding and the web while building problem-solving and creative thinking skills. Our teachers deliver clear and entertaining instruction to ensure students have fun while learning complex coding skills using emojis that represent HTML text, which lowers the barriers to new coders and increases their excitement and understanding of computer science. Students build animations, websites, and games; explore multiple coding languages; program robots; create STEM-based projects both on and offline, and are encouraged to share their projects when they get home.
Instructor: Codemoji's computer science curriculum for schools allows first-eighth grade students to learn the basics of web development and coding, including HTML, CSS, and Javascript, in a fun and easy way, allowing them to create their own websites, animations and much more with our unique and adaptable learning platform. Hands on Fun: American Sign Language (9-13) | Waitlist

Course: Visual communication!!! Come explore Deaf Culture while learning American Sign Language. We’ll make cognitive and emotional connections as we play games, make crafts, sign and sing songs, and participate in outdoor activities while becoming informed about our local Deaf community. Building a basis of language to communicate in Sign Language will include the manual alphabet, numbers, colors, descriptions, feelings/emotions, common greetings and much more! We will communicate in silence by the end of our time together.
Instructor: Jennifer Ferraro joined the Carolina Friends Upper School in 2017 to teach American Sign Language. She continues building CFS’ ASL program as both a modern language option for students and as an elective program for students who wish to learn ASL. Jennifer enjoys spending time with her two children who look forward to attending CFS summer camp every year. Jennifer is an active ASL interpreter and also loves crafting!
Improv 101 (9-14) | Waitlist

Course: Love acting? Love comedy? Sign up for Improv 101 to learn the basics of improvisational theatre! Throughout the week, students will learn improv games, character development, and other acting techniques, and will apply those skills in an improv show on Friday. Campers will also learn skills such as team-building and trusting one’s scene partner that can be applied on or off stage. Register for Improv 101 to become a better performer, make friends, and make people laugh! No experience necessary.
Instructor: Abby Kameny has been involved in Carolina Friends School Summer Programs for 20 years. She started out as a camper, served as a Counselor-In-Training, was hired to work in the Extended Day program, and then became an instructor! She recently taught English in Spain, and is now a high school ESOL teacher in Maryland. Abby has also been involved in theatre, improv, and singing throughout high school and college.

Course: Beginners and experienced musicians alike will learn the fundamentals of writing lyrics and melodies. We will explore songwriting using guitar, bass, ukulele, keys, percussion, and/or electronic music to make original songs as individuals or in a collaboration with other campers. We will explore your favorite songs to see how they were written. You will have the opportunity to perform your original works on the last day of camp!
Instructor: Leites Chiong has been playing guitar for almost 30 years and teaching guitar for over a decade, with stints in various bands along the way. He's a father of four, including three children at Carolina Friends. Leites teaches all styles of music for acoustic and electric guitar, as well as bass guitar and Ukulele (including in CFS’ after-school music program for children AND adults from CFS or anywhere else). He helps beginners through advanced students learn how to play and how to write songs. Leites enjoys working with children and seeing the love of music grow within them.

Course: Addicted to comics? Doodle in class? Come create your own comic book characters and stories. Bring creativity, imagination, and motivation along with your pencil. Exchange ideas, receive input, and work on technique with a professional comic artist. There’s also time for Four Square, games, and Capture the Flag. Oftentimes, campers take multiple sessions. Please bring pencils, erasers, and favorite drawing pens. (Two Advanced Comic Design sessions are available for those who want to expand their skills.)
Instructor: Jamie Charles is a visual artist and the middle school art instructor at Carolina Friends School, where he has been teaching for over two decades. He graduated from UNCG as an art major with a concentration in painting. Passionate about fostering creativity and self-expression, Jamie has dedicated his career to guiding young artists as they explore various artistic mediums and techniques. A parent of an alum of Carolina Friends, he has a deep connection to the school community and values the commitment in shaping well-rounded, thoughtful individuals.
Star Bakers: Great British Bake Off (10-14) | Waitlist

Course: Bake your way to greatness in this delightful camp inspired by The Great British Bake Off! Start with baking basics, mastering essential techniques like piping and layering. Then, unleash your creativity as you develop signature treats and showstopping desserts. End the week by presenting your masterpiece in a celebratory Bake-Off competition. Whether you’re a beginner or a budding star baker, this camp will leave you with sweet memories and new skills!
Instructor: Elizabeth, or Liz (she/her), is completing her B.S. in Elementary Education at NC State with a STEM concentration and a minor in Psychology. Graduating this May, she is thrilled to bring her expertise to CFS! Currently student-teaching in a third-grade class in Wake County, Liz has extensive experience working with children through YMCA camps, nannying, and teaching. Her philosophy focuses on embracing students’ individuality and fostering authentic growth.
In her free time, Liz enjoys card games with her family (including her aunt Julia Stivers, the Upper School librarian at CFS!), cooking with her partner, watching cooking shows, cuddling with her cat Squirrel, doing pilates, cheering on her favorite football teams, and spending time with loved ones. She is also a published author, having authorship on conference papers and research papers on science education.
Queer Joy: Celebrating Ourselves and Our Communities (10-15)

Course: Join us for a weeklong celebration and exploration of queer identities, communities, joy, resilience, resistance, and creativity. Make some new friends and invite the ones you already have to enjoy LGBTQIA+ fashion, visual and performing arts, games and activities, nature walks, and talking circles. We will learn about LGBTQIA+ history while we envision our joyful queer futures together.
Instructor: Billy Dee (they/them) is a visual artist and educator. They currenlty work as an art teacher at Insight Colearning Center and as an adjunct professor of art at Elon University and UNCG. Billy loves to collaborate and has worked in theatre as a set and prop designer and puppet builder. They have collaborated with numerous community organizations to create posters, illustrations, and educational materials. Billy is currently working on illustrations for a book, and is very excited to collaborate with campers at CFS this Summer!
Billy enjoys spending time with their animal friends Cookie and Lyra (sheep), Gilbert and Venus (pigs), and Cowlick, the most wonderful chicken.
Nature, Hiking, and Writing (11-16) | Newly Added Course!

Course: The Piedmont region we call home has surprises waiting around every bend! This week, we will turn our attention to blooming flowers, mossy rocks underwater, and turtles plunging off logs to cool off. We will spend our days hiking (easy/moderate level), reading nature poetry and prose, and crafting our own written creations inspired by the natural world. Campers will create a collection of their writing complete with pressed leaves, flowers, and artistic renderings of nature. No matter your experience with hiking or writing, all who enjoy a walk through the woods are most welcome!
Instructor: Nancy L. Stone (she/her/hers) is new to Carolina Friends School Summer Programs. She currently teaches Pre-K in Holly Springs and “Our Whole Lives & Sexuality Course” to 8th & 9th graders at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Raleigh. A graduate of Mount Holyoke College with a BA in Psychology and Education, Nancy is a lifelong writer, teacher, traveler, and equestrian. Nancy grew up journaling, writing letters and poetry to family and friends, and has published poetry, essays, and editorials in newspapers and magazines. She won 2nd place in a short story contest with the Durham Writers group. When Nancy taught elementary & middle school, she often wrote her own curricula; a student favorite was an interdisciplinary, multicultural poetry unit. Rivaling her love of writing, Nancy loves to read, ride and compete her horse in Dressage, and explore the outdoors with her husband and their dogs. Nancy is very excited to bring her love of creative writing and nature to our summer programs.
Let's Kick It! Soccer Camp (11-15)

Course: Ah, the beautiful game! This is an opportunity to be in a friendly, non-competitive setting and get better at the simple game so many of us love. We will focus more on playing the right way, emphasizing teamwork, sportsmanship, and safety, and less on keeping score. We will practice intermediate skills like first touch, passing and moving, spatial awareness, and using our bodies to shield the ball in order to move beyond “kick and run” soccer. We will also practice with the challenge of playing on a mixed-ability team - some minimal familiarity with a ball at your feet is preferred, but this camp is open to all skill levels. A great camp for anyone who loves soccer!
Instructor: Owen is a rising junior at Boston University, studying Education and English. Before heading to Boston, Owen attended Carolina Friends all the way from Campus Early School through Upper School. While at the Upper School, he developed the Pokemon Trainer Challenge camp as the youngest CFS Camp Instructor, and has now taught at CFS Summer Programs for five years, including working as the General Operations Coordinator last summer. Outside of camp, Owen loves to run, play soccer, read, and watch TV with his friends and family, and cheer for the Boston Red Sox.
Embroidery Explorations (11-16)

Course: Embroidery explorations: Whether you have embroidered before or are just learning how, come join us. I’ll teach you some basic stitches and we can move on from there to try more advanced stitches, learning together. We’ll design pillows, wall hangings, book marks, Christmas ornaments, and even try to add some creativity to clothing.
Instructor: Karen Clark is a science teacher at Immaculata Catholic School in Durham. She teaches middle school, so enjoys working with other age groups during the summer. She has three wonderful kids and a crazy dog named Ralphie that keeps her active. In her spare time (yeah, right) she enjoys playing the flute, reading mysteries, exercising, and doing puzzles.
Adventures in Anime: Exploring English Through Japanese Animation (11-18)

Course: Narratives! They move the soul and exist in all walks of life. Often the joy of storytelling is lost in the trees of a normal educational career. In this workshop, we will explore narratives in anime and analyze the role of language in creating meaning. We will watch anime, discuss themes, analyze writing, create our own graphics, play educational games, and more! If you are an avid anime watcher or are interested in learning more about it, let’s talk about what makes anime awesome, what stories resonate with us and why. Some of the materials will be Rated TV-14 in the US and we will be following a high school level curriculum, however, the content will still be accessible for students under this age.
Instructor: Achiri Acha has been at Carolina Friends School since he was six years old! He mentored with Jordan Shamp in Sports camp, became a Counselor-In-Training, and then moved on to become a camp assistant and instructor for the past eight summers. Achiri has worked in Extended Day at Lerner School and School’s Out Camps at the Jewish Community Center and currently works at USA Ninja Challenge during the school year. Achiri's goal is to be an elementary school physical education instructor and coach.

Course: What makes you a more effective leader and team player? Let us show you some tools. Using group building games, art, theater, movement, discussion, and individual reflection we learn and practice leadership techniques. We will work as individuals and as a group to enhance confidence, cooperation, and communication. The workshop is an excellent exercise in developing leadership skills for jobs and community roles.
If you're interested in being a Counselor-In-Training in CFS Summer Programs this year or next, this course is a prerequisite. We work through some basic “how to deal with” situations, focusing on conflict resolution and effective ways of listening and responding. And no, we do not sit in chairs throughout the day listening to lectures! This is an active course culminating in a "shadow day" as a CIT and a certificate of successful leadership training completion
Instructor: Tracy Schledorn just finished her fourth year as a CFS staff member. She is honored to be the school counselor for the Middle School. Before CFS, Tracy worked as a teacher and school counselor in Alamance County for 21 years. She enjoys gardening and exploring with her husband and two children. Tracy adored summer activity camps growing up and is always ready to try something new. As a life-long learner, she enjoys a variety of activities and relishes the opportunity to have fun and play!
