Minecraft Community (9-16) | Waitlist
This course is offered in multiple weeks:
Week Two / June 24-28
Week Three / July 1-5
Tuition: 395
Course: Anyone ever told you to “get lost?”If so, there’s no better way to take their advice than to delve into the amazingly expansive and immersive world of Minecraft. For a moment, let’s step away from the term “video-game” and substitute “wildly-versatile-open-ended-world-manipulating-art machine.”
Minecraft’s critically acclaimed, sandbox-style gameplay is a constant exercise in collaborative exploration, goal-setting, and boundless “Imagineering”—whether hunting and gathering to build agrarian homesteads across various landscapes or configuring an automated railway/refinement system that acquires, transports, and processes raw materials the player can use to create their own scaled recreation of the Taj Mahal.
The objective of Minecraft Community is to “get lost, together,” building community. With a little direction and a lot of improv, students will enter into Minecraft’s Survival Mode, banding together to outlive the Mobs and Elements, within a democratic community. With inventive jobs (e.g. Hunters, Explorers, Architects, Artisans, etc.) and responsibilities and a community lot-casting system, students will forge ahead to establish a lasting society amidst wiles of Mobs and the unforgiving wildernesses.
We will be using Minecraft: Education Edition on Chromebooks.
Instructor: Achiri Acha has been at CFS since he was six years old! He mentored with Jordan Shamp in Sports camp, became a Counselor-In-Training, and then moved on to become a camp assistant and instructor for the past eight summers. Achiri has worked in Extended Day at Lerner School and School’s Out Camps at the Jewish Community Center and currently works at USA Ninja Challenge during the school year. Achiri's goal is to be an elementary school physical education instructor and coach.
Animation Creation (10-15) | Waitlist
Tuition: 395
Course: Calling all junior special effects artists and world builders! In this camp we will experiment with making animations using a variety of non-digital styles, including claymation, object manipulation, frame by frame, and jointed puppets. Students will learn principles of photography and movement, watch a variety of real world animations, and will be able to get to work on day one making magic happen through the power of animation! Students will leave the camp with several animated clips, plus the know-how to continue experimenting once they return home!
Although we will have structured days and projects, students will have a lot of freedom about their creative direction, and whether to collaborate or work solo. The camp is less about making finished films, and more about having a great time and seeing what’s possible! This camp does not require students to have any experience with animating or animation software - just an enthusiasm for experimenting and discovery! Animation camp is geared toward campers who are able to focus on projects for longer periods of time.
Instructor: Nyssa Collins is a multimedia artist, musician, and generally enthusiastic person. She is originally from Burlington, NC and studied Piano Performance at Humboldt State University. Tragically, she no longer lives in Durham, where she was a piano teacher, stilt walker, public artist, and puppeteer/artist with Paperhand Puppet Intervention for five years. She is currently a graduate student in the art department at the University of Tennessee, where she studies time based media, including shadow puppetry and animation, and the pipe organ. See her art here!: www.nyssacollins.com.

Prepare to get wet!
Instructor: Before coming to North Carolina and, for a time, CFS as a member of the Shop crew, Matt Walters spent 18+ years working in outdoor educational programming at numerous schools, camps, nature centers, and non-profit children's museums. While living in Washington, D.C., he founded and directed Outdoors With Friends, an organization committed to facilitating outdoor recreational programming for children with Autism. He is certified as a Wilderness First Responder.
In his spare time Matt enjoys all things out-of-doors, in particular backpacking, kayaking, climbing, and skiing with his two children. Off campus you can find him playing guitar, wandering aimlessly through the woods, or keeping a keen eye out for the ultimate snowball fight.

We introduce basic rules, strategy, and techniques of basketball, Frisbee, soccer, and some indoor gym games (as well as Capture the Flag!) for the fun of playing. We focus on technique, skill development, and team building. All activities take place on our outdoor playing fields (using cooler morning temperatures) and in our two air-conditioned gym facilities. Sports experience is absolutely not necessary. Our goal is for you to learn how to play so you’ll feel comfortable knowing the rules, understanding the strategy, and practicing good teamwork. We don’t stress competition. We're here to help you improve your game and have fun.
Instructor: Mike Oggiani is originally from Berkshire County in Western Massachusetts. He graduated from Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, Vermont in 2018. He later went on to earn a master’s degree in Elementary Education from Westfield State University in Westfield, Massachusetts in 2022. Michael is of the belief that all children are naturally adventurous, open-minded, and inquisitive, and that it is the job of the teacher to help nourish and strengthen those qualities. Michael enjoys the creative side of teaching and strives to make sure the learning environment in his classroom is a student-centered one that promotes student self-sufficiency and creativity. When not in the classroom, Michael enjoys hiking, cycling, watching movies, and cheering for the Boston Bruins, Boston Celtics, and Green Bay Packers. If you happen to spot him outside of school, good for you! It’s as rare a thing as seeing a unicorn in the wild.
Leadership Challenge (12-15) | 3 spaces
This course is offered in multiple weeks:
Week One / June 17-21, Tracy Schledorn
Week Three / July 1-5, Blair Cadden
Week Four / July 8-12, Kate Pendergrass
Tuition: 365

Using group building games, art, theater, movement, discussion, and individual reflection we learn and practice leadership techniques. We will work as individuals and as a group to enhance confidence, cooperation, and communication. The workshop is an excellent exercise in developing leadership skills for jobs and community roles.
If you're interested in being a Counselor-In-Training (ages 13-15) in CFS Summer Programs, this course is a prerequisite. We work through some basic “how to deal with” situations, focusing on conflict resolution and effective ways of listening and responding. And no, we do not sit in chairs throughout the day listening to lectures! This is an active course culminating in a "shadow day" as a CIT and a certificate of successful leadership training completion.
Instructor: Blair Cadden (she/her) is a theatre-maker and teaching artist who is thrilled to be sharing her love of theatre and camp with CFS this summer! She holds a B.A. in theatre from Wofford College and an M.F.A. in directing from Boston University. Blair is originally from Charleston, South Carolina, where she was the co-founding Artistic Director of the theatre company 5th Wall Productions. She’s taught theatre to students of all ages at Lexington Children's Theatre, Spartanburg Youth Theatre, Boston University, Duke University, and–currently–McDougle Middle School in Carrboro.
When she’s not making or teaching theatre, you can find Blair cuddling with her beloved dog Moe, hiking, baking cupcakes, or making very lumpy pottery.
