Course: Do you love fairytales? Then now is your chance to dive deep into some enchanting tales. We’ll compare and contrast different versions of fairy tale classics, write our very own fairytales, and play games inspired by our favorite stories! 

Instructor: Olivia Wroth was born and raised in North Carolina and grew up going to Carolina Friends Summer Camps! Her home away from home is the mountains and she has spent the last couple of years exploring the Boone area of North Carolina. When Olivia is not in the mountains, she loves to do art projects. She is passionate about child-led learning and helping children to develop connections with their community. She loves working with children and currently teaches Pre-K students at Lerner School in Durham.

Course: So many things to make! Air-propelled boats, paper designs printed with vegetables, tasty treats from our own recipes, and a miniature village! We’ll have fun making all kinds of things in this class. Have a parade? Run a restaurant? Create and play games? Whatever we do, we’ll make it fun!

Instructor: Bo Newsome (he/him) is a musician (an oboist, composer, and educator), teaching students at his home (or on Zoom) and at Duke University. He frequently creates and presents programs and residencies for young people, and attended workshops presented by Kennedy Center’s program for teaching artists. He developed a general music program and created original operas with children in a remote public school on an island in Maine. 

To satisfy his sweet tooth in a house with few sweets, Bo started baking pies and cookies when he was little. He’s really never met a pie he didn’t like, but he especially likes lemon, lime, and peach. In addition to cooking, Bo’s been a lover of animals, architecture, and art, and a collector of treasures as long as he can remember. He’s training to be a master gardener this year.

Course: Ready, set, go for a week of lots of fun playing outdoor and indoor games from South America and around the world. Playing outside keeps kids active, entertained, and socializing. It also helps to build essential skills that go with us as we grow older. In this course students will build their own shelter and play “sapo,” sack race, ring toss, water games (bring your swimwear), and more. We’ll also make crafts every day to play indoors. We’ll end our week with an Outdoor Game Extravaganza. It will be a lot of fun!

Instructor: Kelly Yupanqui is from Perú and moved to the United States in 2005. She earned her B.S. in Elementary Education and her M.Ed. in Educational Administration at Universidad Nacional de Trujillo, Perú. Kelly got her certification as a Montessori Teacher from the American Montessori Society.

She has taught different levels of students for 25 years in public and private settings in her native country and in the USA (including now at Carolina Friends School). Kelly loves to dance, sing, play the guitar, cook, do arts and crafts, and be outside and she enjoys sharing all her talents and her native Spanish Language during Summer Programs.

Course: An active, fun-filled week of sports adventure just for you! We learn how to play a variety of sports, focusing on skills and learning the rules. We work on team building and create some crafts that go along with our new indoor and outdoor games! We concentrate on learning how to play, building confidence, keeping in shape, and receiving guidance and encouragement from our coach. An excellent class for the active or wannabe active camper!

Instructor: Markeith Gary joined CFS in 2016 and has served as varsity basketball coach for the Upper School. He helped co-found a non-profit travel basketball program called the NC Wildcats serving the Chapel Hill-Durham area. A graduate of Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia, and a school-year educator, Markeith has served as mentor to many in his community and volunteers at the local community center teaching life skills. He enjoys spending time with his wife Marsha and their three children (Nina, Myles, and Laila).

Course: During the week we will collaborate, create, and perform an original story, including making the props and costumes. If a child decides they don’t want to act, there is still plenty for them to do–sound effects, stage management, cue card holding, etc. Come join us for a week of non-stop storytime fun!

Instructor: Catherine Harkey taught at CFS Summer Programs for several years pre-Covid, and is so happy to be able to teach again this year! In the past she has helped with the Extended Day Program and was a Substitute Teacher at CFS. For many years Catherine worked in libraries, especially programming children’s offerings. Working with children is her favorite thing to do in life.

Course: Spin and dye wool yarn. Weave cotton cloth. Create all kinds of fantastic fiber art. By trying your hand at it yourself, discover how humans made everyday clothing and shelter items from local plant and animal fibers.

Instructor: Jan French is a fiber artist and weaving educator/advocate, demonstrator, and collaborator weaving on location at schools, arts councils, museums, festivals, and Scrap Exchange events. She is a member of the Triangle Weavers Guild’s Education Committee and has instructed hundreds of folks of all ages how to build and weave delightful and useful items on a simple handmade loom.

Before coming to CFS in 2008, Jan worked in environmental and open space planning and lived for two years in Geneva, Switzerland. She has Masters degrees in Environmental Management from Duke University and in Landscape Architecture from North Carolina State University’s School of Design.

At CFS Jan has served students as Middle School substitute teacher, art project coordinator for three Martin Luther, King, Jr. Day celebrations, Science Day guest speaker, and Extended Day (AfterHours) staff. She’s also a former CFS parent!

Course: Do you want to travel the world AND eat your way through it? If you said yes, this camp is the one for you! Each day, we will explore a different part of the world by cooking up delicious meals and learning about different cultures. Along the way, we’ll learn some unique cooking techniques, explore new recipes, learn about different parts of the world, and, best of all, taste our many creations!

Instructor: Tom Latimer has been running camps at CFS for 14 years. He has been teaching for 25 years and has a Masters degree in elementary education. He currently teaches 2nd grade at Immaculata Catholic School in Durham and plays guitar in Chapel Hill band Zoltar’s Fortune. 

Tom lives in Chapel Hill with his wife Alison and their two cats Nora and Lionel. He enjoys seeing and playing music, eating at our local restaurants, collecting vinyl records, and working with kids.

Course: Building your best self from the inside out through engaging activities for every part of you! During this eclectic and interactive week, we’ll experience goal-setting, yoga, obstacle courses, self-reflection, games, challenges, and self-advocacy. Each session will vary depending on the needs and interests of the group. Come ready for fun and adventure both inside and out.

Course: Player's Handbook sales are topping the bestseller lists! Self-published game supplements are breaking commercial records on Kickstarter! Celebrities are live-streaming their game sessions! These days, the classic fantasy role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons is experiencing a major renaissance. And it's no wonder! Playing D&D may activate a wider range of skills than any other game: puzzle solving, critical thinking, statistical analysis, interpersonal negotiation, theatrical performance, creative storytelling, and imaginative worldbuilding. And let's not forget dice rolling!

Students will build characters, play through adventures, and study the fundamentals of role-playing game design to discover what makes the best D&D sessions so memorable. By the end of the week, we'll use what we've learned to craft an original adventure for other players to experience. Whether you're a newcomer to the game or an avid fan, there's a place at the table for you!

Instructor: Brad Stackhouse has been working with kids since he was old enough to work. Having worked in youth programs around the world, he has learned to lead from behind, letting the kids lead the way, supporting them in whatever way they need. He has a wide range of interests including building, growing, cooking, gaming, music, dance, sports, and storytelling, and is willing to give just about anything a shot. He’s passionate about community development and engagement and building a healthier, more sustainable society.

Course: For our older students, here’s an opportunity to enhance your skills in comic drawing. Led by Jamie Charles who has been teaching Comic Design in CFS Summer Programs for many years, the workshop provides a meeting place for expanding skills and talents. You do NOT have to have taken Comic Design prior to this. This is for those students who want to work a bit intensely on their creations. Share your techniques, exchange tips, learn new skills, collaborate with a partner, and learn from the community.

Instructor: Jamie Charles, a working illustrator, graduated from UNC-G in Fine Arts. Besides exhibiting his own work, Jamie works at CFS as an art instructor for Middle School students. He is also a champion Capture the Flag leader, having coached his workshop groups to many victories (not that he is bragging). Jamie offers private lessons in drawing and art.

Course: Anyone ever told you to “get lost?” If so, there’s no better way to take their advice than to delve into the amazingly expansive and immersive world of Minecraft. For a moment, let’s step away from the term “video-game” and substitute “wildly-versatile-open-ended-world-manipulating-art machine.” Minecraft’s critically acclaimed, sandbox-style gameplay is a constant exercise in collaborative exploration, goal-setting, and boundless “Imagineering”—whether hunting and gathering to build agrarian homesteads across various landscapes or configuring an automated railway/refinement system that acquires, transports, and processes raw materials the player can use to create their own scaled recreation of the Taj Mahal.

The objective of Minecraft Community is to “get lost, together,” building community. With a little direction and a lot of improv, students will enter into Minecraft’s Survival Mode, banding together to outlive the Mobs and Elements, within a democratic community. With inventive jobs (e.g. Hunters, Explorers, Architects, Artisans, etc.) and responsibilities and a community lot-casting system, students will forge ahead to establish a lasting society amidst wiles of Mobs and the unforgiving wildernesses.

We will be using Minecraft: Education Edition on Chromebooks.

Instructor: Achiri Acha has been at CFS since he was six years old! He mentored with Jordan Shamp in Sports camp, became a Counselor-In-Training, and then moved on to become a camp assistant and instructor for the past seven summers. Achiri has worked in Extended Day at Lerner School and School’s Out Camps at the Jewish Community Center and currently works at USA Ninja Challenge during the school year. Achiri's goal is to be an elementary school physical education instructor and coach.

Course: Join us this week to begin developing or refining your acting skills! Actors will choose a monologue and use this monologue to practice developing a character, memorization, acting, and performing. We will play theatre games, learn acting warmups, and do select scenes from plays to practice the skills we are learning. We will perform our monologues for family and friends at the end of the week. No experience is necessary. 

Instructor: A California native, Stella Bowers (she/her) has been proud to call Durham home for 14 years. In May 2023 she will graduate from Meredith College with a B.A. in Psychology, a minor in Theatre, and a K-6 Teaching Licensure. She has almost 10 years of experience working with children as a babysitter, nanny, camp counselor, party princess entertainer, and student teacher. Her life’s passion is teaching and nurturing a love of learning in her students. In her free time Stella can be found creating art, reading, participating in local theatre productions, thrifting, and making music. This is her first year teaching CFS summer programs.

Course: Southern food is full of heart and flavor, and we’ll be making some of the best dishes the South has to offer. Mac ‘n cheese, chicken ‘n dumplings, grits, pie, biscuits, cornbread, banana pudding, deviled eggs, sweet potatoes, corn pudding, collard greens, pimento cheese, and all sorts of potatoes. And we’ll learn how to have these foods as part of a balanced and nutritious meal: balancing our plates with delicious fruits, vegetables, protein, and grains. Bring your appetite! Unfortunately, dietary restrictions and allergies may not be able to be accommodated in this particular camp. Instructor: Ruthie Allen (she/her) is a lover of puzzles, cooking, crafting, and education. She began working in Summer Programs in 2018 as the Extended Day Coordinator, then in 2019 as the Assistant Director, and in 2020 and 2021 as the full-time Summer Programs Coordinator. Ruthie loves Summer Programs, and she’s excited to return this year as an Instructor. She has her degree in education and public policy from UNC Chapel Hill, has earned her Early Childhood Education accreditation, has worked as a math teacher in the CFS Middle School, and has worked with Peaceful Schools NC, a CFS-based non-profit focused on Restorative Practices in education.

Ruthie is half of Pain & Panic, where she collaborates with a friend to create original clothing and accessories she sells in local art markets. She’s also the founder of the “Triangle Tennis Alliance,” a local group for queer tennis players and loves to play with them every week. Ruthie has also directed many plays and musicals, including with local children’s theaters. She looks forward to another awesome summer with CFS!

Course: It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a... Frisbee! Ultimate Frisbee is one of the fastest growing youth sports in the US, and we want to teach you how to play! Ultimate combines the continuous play of soccer, the end-zones of football, and the pivoting of basketball all with a frisbee to create a fast-paced, exciting game! This camp will teach the fundamentals of the sport, going over different types of throws and the basic strategies of offense and defense. Participants will learn about Spirit of the Game, a fundamental part of Ultimate that focuses on sportsmanship and respect for all players. Each camper will receive an Ultimate Frisbee disc with registration!

About Triangle Ultimate: Triangle Ultimate is a local nonprofit whose mission is to collaboratively build a community emphasizing accessibility, relationships, and engagement through learning, playing, and teaching the sport of Ultimate in the Triangle region of North Carolina. Triangle Ultimate is excited to strengthen our relationship with the Carolina Friends School community through great summer camp experiences.
