Music Lessons

Child and teacher during drum music lesson

We offer individual after-school music lessons for students of all ages (including parents and grandparents!) at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. Students from home, other schools, and anywhere in the world are welcome, for one or more programs.

We are offering in-person AND some online options for the 2025-2026 school year.

Our teachers tailor their methods to each student's individual needs and interests as they build a musical foundation.

Students will need to provide their own instruments (other than pianos and percussion instruments for actual lessons). Teachers are happy to provide advice on the purchase or rental of instruments. While practice requirements vary significantly according to age, level, and goals, students and families should understand that regular practice between lessons is essential to progress.

Half-hour music lessons are $45.00, 45-minute lessons are $67.50, and hour-long lessons are $90.00.

We're glad to use our Lower and Middle School Extended Day gratis as a bridge around lessons as long as that's the reason a student is in after-hours care.

While we welcome registrations from Chapel Hill and Durham Early School students, families would need to be able to transport their child to our Friends School Road campus for lessons.

Strings For Starters

Course: An introduction to the violin and/or viola for beginners grades 3 and 4 with veteran musician and music educator Barbara Jelkmann McCauley. We will learn all about the fascinating family of instruments called ‘orchestral’ strings. You hear their sound every day in every style of music, from the local fiddle jam to Disney to pop, to Broadway, jazz, and the North Carolina Symphony. It all begins with a class such as this. Join the fun as we sing and play tunes from folk to famous. Interested students will be well positioned then to continue individual lessons.

Class Size: three to six students

Schedule: Thursdays 3:20-4:05 pm

  • September: 11, 18, 25
  • October: 2, 9, 23, 30
  • November: 13, 20

Tuition: 550

Enrollment: Please register using this Google form. After we close the 2024-2025 "season" in CampInTouch, we'll transfer the enrollment to that system and then be in touch about financials.
