Natural Holiday Decorating | 5 December (Waitlist)
Sunday 5 December 2021 (2:00-3:30 pm)
Course: Join Lower School Art Teacher Natasha Shannon, her helper Paige Vinson, and other CFS families for a Sunday afternoon of creativity and fun! Using natural materials on hand for you —including pine cones, acorns, various seeds, and much more — create holiday decor (from a menorah to Christmas ornaments to whatever design you want to make) for your home or to give as gifts. Enjoy refreshments, creativity, and camaraderie at this festive family event and fifth annual tradition!
For students ages 5 to 12 with accompanying adult(s) (we'll be using hot glue guns). Middle School students older than 12 and Upper Schoolers may participate without accompanying adult(s).
Because of social distancing in the Lower School Multi, this year's program is limited to eight families. We encourage you to register even if all spaces are initially taken--we'll go to the waitlist as we're able.
Instructor: Ever since she was a third grade student, Natasha Shannon knew that she wanted to be an art teacher. She has been teaching at CFS since the fall of 2003, including a North Carolina Backpacking Adventure course as part of Summer Programs.
Prior to her work here, she taught in the North Carolina and New Mexico public school systems and for two years at the Monteverde Friends School in Costa Rica. She graduated from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington and later received her teaching certification from the University of New Mexico.
She grew up in the mountains of North Carolina climbing trees, building forts in the woods, and picking blackberries to make blackberry pies. She still enjoys picking berries in the summer and making jam with her daughter who is a student in the Upper School. In the winter she and her family like to find the best sledding runs possible when the snow falls.
Tuition: $25 per student
Registration is open with an existing or new CampInTouch account (free of charge).
Nailed It! Holiday Edition | 11 December (Waitlist)
Based on the baking competition show, this experience will explore merry messes, festive fiascos, and decorative disasters. Each family will work together as a team to recreate a carefully-crafted confection that far exceeds the skill level of an average person. At the end of our time together, teams will pose proudly with their creative creations and declare they have, indeed, "Nailed It!"
Instructor: Kristina Krzywonos came to CFS in 2018 with eight years of teaching experience at an independent school in High Point, North Carolina. During that time she was an adviser in both the middle and upper school, facilitated service learning opportunities, coached several Odyssey of the Mind teams, and served as a member of the faculty leadership team. At Carolina Friends, she's taught chemistry and other classes in the Upper School and now teaches science in Middle School.
Her degree in chemistry is from High Point University, where her research ranged from instrumental analysis to designing an experiential science outreach program for local elementary schools. Kristina's teaching style is grounded in the idea that learning is a process, demonstrated in her redesign of the eighth grade science curriculum at her former school to provide feedback to students without the use of numerical grades.
Kristina has offered versions of Nailed It! as a CFS Summer Programs course and as a Middle School, end-of-year Exploratorium week.
Tuition: $45 for 1 child & family (+ $10 for each additional child)
Registration is open with an existing or new CampInTouch account (free of charge).
