Athletics

Upper School Girl's Ultimate team in action

Developing the whole student and fostering a growth mindset are at the heart of our physical education program. Our athletic coaches are educators, first and foremost.

Athletics at Carolina Friends School is guided by our mission and philosophy and informed by Quaker values such as truthfulness, simplicity, non-violent resolution of conflict, respect for others and oneself, and the power of community. Teaching and nurturing the whole child means developing a lifelong appreciation of physical health and activity.

Our athletes are challenged to perform the best that they can and with integrity, and to build team community through support, communication, and encouragement. We believe fair play and sportsmanship is crucial to healthy competition. While we want to foster the work that leads to a sense of accomplishment, we also want our student-athletes to learn to aspire without fear of failure and to learn to grow from disappointment.

Every student is encouraged to participate in an interscholastic sport, whether they bring years of experience on a travel club team or are new to organized sports.

COVID-19 Protocols

Visitors for athletic competitions must agree to comply with our COVID-19 protocols as a condition of attendance. If a guest is repeatedly approached about violations to the protocols, they may be asked to leave.

Indoor Home Competitions

We have created enhanced COVID-19 protocols for home basketball games. All game attendees should complete a self-screening before coming to a game.

Do not come to a game if you:

  • Have any of the following symptoms:
    • Fever (temp above 100.4º F ) or chills
    • Cough
    • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
    • Fatigue
    • Muscle or body aches
    • Headache
    • New loss of taste or smell
    • Sore throat
    • Congestion or runny nose
    • Nausea or vomiting
    • Diarrhea
  • Have been notified that you were exposed to a person positive for COVID-19 in the past 14 days or have been advised you need to quarantine.
  • Have been diagnosed with COVID-19 in the last 10 days.

Masking

  • All players, coaches, staff, officials, and spectators will be required to properly mask at all times indoors and outside.
  • All masks must be close-fitting at the nose, cheeks, and chin, with no gaps. Use KN95, N95, or KF94 masks if they provide a good seal or double mask with a cloth mask over a medical-style mask. We will monitor proper masking protocols at all games, greet and check each person before entering the lobby or gym, and will provide disposable surgical masks if necessary. If you are unable to abide by these protocols, you will be asked to leave.
  • Carolina Friends does not allow masking exemptions

Information for Visiting Athletes

  • DO NOT arrive more than 45 minutes prior to the start of your game (unless teams travel together on one bus).
  • Officials will remind athletes at the beginning of each game to wear properly fitted masks. Athletes and coaches may not take mask breaks during gameplay. Officials will provide an agreed-upon mask break time-out (halfway through each quarter).
  • Each team will be provided with a visitor room. If teams travel together on a bus and cannot leave right after the game, they will be provided with a space to wait until the next game(s) is over. Players are expected to stay in this designated space.
  • NO food or beverages in the facility. Food and beverages may be consumed outdoors.
  • Athletes should bring a large personal water bottle. Water will be available for refilling.

Information for Spectators

  • Players are limited to two spectators per game. Team rosters will be cross-checked with visitors as they enter the gym. No exceptions.
  • Spectators and athletes of each game will be required to leave the gym when that game is over.
  • The gym lobby will not be available for gathering. All fans need to be seated in the bleachers or outside. If a visitor needs to step out of the gym, they may use outdoor spaces.
  • DO NOT arrive more than 15 minutes prior to the start of the game. Visitors may be asked to wait outside until the gym empties from the previous game.
  • Bathrooms: Visitors may use the bathrooms in the long hallway of the lobby. Read and adhere to signage on the bathroom doors. Bathrooms are limited to 3 people at a time. Remember to slide the vacant/occupied sign to the correct position when entering and exiting the bathroom.
  • NO food or beverages in the facility. Food and beverages may be consumed outdoors.
  • CFS does not charge an entry fee for games.

Home Swim Meets

The Orange County Sportsplex requires face coverings to be worn by all who attend the meet with the only exception being swimmers who are in the water. All swimmers, all coaches, all officials, and all volunteers are permitted into the facility. No other spectators will be allowed on deck.

Outdoor Athletic Events

All players and spectators are required to wear masks at all times.

Away Game Information

When traveling to play or watch away games, be prepared for a school to have significantly fewer COVID-19 protocols. Orange County Health Department’s rules for quarantine after exposure may be more strict in a mask-optional setting such as what may be entered during away games. Our players will still be held to the Orange County protocol rules regardless of where the game takes place. Use the information below to decide if traveling to those games is comfortable for you and your family. Carolina Friends will allow our teams to play at other schools even if those schools do not consistently follow our protocols, as long as families agree to the potentially increased risks involved.

Carolina Friends School COVID-19 risk mitigation strategies during away games include:

  • Athletes, fans, and coaching staff will wear masks while visiting and playing at opponent locations.
  • Carolina Friends will provide athletes with KN95 or N95 masks.
  • Carolina Friends will notify players and their families of our opponent's detailed protocols prior to each away game.

All student-athletes will be encouraged to continue to wear masks properly during the school day, at practices, and at games.
