A Pre-K to Grade 12 Independent Quaker Day School Serving the Greater Durham-Chapel Hill Area

STEM Learning

At Carolina Friends School, an important component to our Upper School curriculum is building knowledge, skills, and understandings in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) for our high school students.

We are preparing the next generation of researchers, innovators, and critical thinkers. In keeping with our mission to "foster active exploration and quiet reflection," both applied learning through hands-on experience and measured observation are vital to our educational experience. No field of study is an island here. Interdisciplinary exploration occurs through both purposefully planned collaboration and in sparks of curiosity that arise in the classroom each day.

Through our many elective choices, students can experience everything from building permaculture farming projects from recycled or repurposed materials to learning experiential anatomy through the lens of dance and movement.

Field Work in a Cloud Forest

Each year, Upper School students can choose from a variety of End of Year Experiences in service and field work. A recent program in Peru partnered with the Manu Learning Center, allowing students to learn more about conservation biology and collect data on countless species of butterflies, amphibians, birds, and mammals.
