Student Success Program
Carolina Friends School contracts with professional tutors and coaches to provide services to our students on our campus both during the school day and after school. Student Success staff members have had background checks and are experienced in their respective fields.
Support Offered By Student Success
Remedial tutoring is designed to reteach material that the student did not master in class. Remedial tutoring usually involves specialized teaching methods designed to enhance understanding and we recommend that students attend two sessions/week.
Classroom Support Tutoring
This type of tutoring is designed to bolster the student’s understanding of current classroom instruction. It may involve extra practice or specific teaching methods.
Homework Helper Tutoring
Some parents ask tutors to supervise and support their child’s homework. In this situation, the tutor is supplying academic support where needed.
Coaching is very different from tutoring in that the purpose is not to teach specific academic content, but rather to directly teach and then support the student in managing time, planning and organizational issues. Coaches meet with students once a week to guide the student in developing goals for completing responsibilities both in and out of school. The student makes a weekly plan and reports to the coach daily on progress toward those goals.
Step 1 – Complete the Student Success Application Form and submit it to Kersten Biehn at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Step 2 – Once Kersten has received your application, she will provide you with the name(s) and contact information of tutors or coaches who both have expertise in the area(s) indicated and are available to work with your child at the designated time.
Step 3 – You contact the tutors/coaches and decide whom you would like to hire and when they will meet with your child. Complete the Parent Agreement Form and return that to Kersten Biehn at email@example.com. Kersten will notify you and the tutor of where they will meet for their sessions.
Step 4 – Services begin! You will be billed on a monthly basis for services. Please see the Parent Handbook for more details.
Kersten has 20 years experience as an educator in both charter and independent schools in North Carolina and Texas. She has taught history, English, and Holocaust studies at the high school level, as well as history and social studies methodology at the undergraduate level. Over the past decade, she has held a variety of leadership positions, including Principal of Teaching and Learning and Interim Head at The Lerner School. She recently left that position to start writing a young adult science fiction series with her brother. In her role at Lerner, Kersten organized accommodations plans, managed and supervised the learning support program, created and taught an executive functioning/ writing course, and served as a push-in classroom support teacher for fourth and fifth grade mathematics, in addition to her responsibilities as the Principal. Kersten has a fabulous husband and two awesome kids. She is a CFS parent.
