A Pre-K to Grade 12 Independent Quaker Day School Serving the Greater Durham-Chapel Hill Area

Curriculum

Our curriculum seeks to address the varying interests of our students while providing a solid foundation in basic skills.

All students take morning (core) classes in math, language arts, science, and social studies throughout the year. Morning classes may also include Spanish, physical education, art, dance, and conflict resolution. Courses range either the entire year or a single trimester and are grouped by Middle School year (first, second, third, fourth).

Through our elective program, students may choose, with the counsel of their parents and advisors, three elective courses per trimester that are both interesting to them and suited to their needs and abilities. An emphasis is placed on students actively experimenting and problem-solving for themselves and being encouraged to take increasing responsibility for themselves. The curricular requirement areas for electives are:

  • Personal Growth
  • Performing Art
  • Visual Art
  • Physical Education
  • Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math
  • General

Choose Your Own Adventure

Throughout the year, we offer approximately 90 elective courses. Some are year-long, but most are completed within a trimester. Some are dedicated to service to the community, while others allow students to explore interests such as musical theater, computer coding, woodworking, or public speaking.
