A Pre-K to Grade 12 Independent Quaker Day School Serving the Greater Durham-Chapel Hill Area

Community

We are not only a school but also a learning community.

Our families play an integral role in the Lower School community. Our location on Main Campus allows for collaboration with students and teachers from Early School to Upper School, creating unique curriculum opportunities. Additionally, we maintain close relationships with the education departments of nearby universities.

Parent participation in the life of the Lower School is welcome and encouraged! There are a variety of ways parents can get involved, such as:

  • serving as a parent liaison between the Lower School and Parent Staff Association
  • serving as a class parent for their child’s classroom
  • planning and teaching and Interest Group or Discovery Group on Friday afternoons
  • assisting in the Lower School library
  • reading with students each week
  • sharing family traditions
  • working on the grounds around the Lower School
  • sharing resources, knowledge, and activities related to the yearly Lower School theme
  • offering other ideas about how they can participate

Additional information and an online interest form may be found by logging in to our Parent Portal.

Creative Collaboration

A group of students in an art class create paintings and figure drawings and put them together with text in an air mail envelope. A pair of students then opens that envelope in their dance class and incorporates these "found" objects into a dance they choreograph together. This is just one small example of the ways in which our students and teachers find interesting ways to work together and inspire new ways of thinking and acting.
