A Pre-K to Grade 12 Independent Quaker Day School Serving the Greater Durham-Chapel Hill Area

Early Learners Program

We regret that COVID-19 safety concerns require us to cancel all eight weeks of our Early Learners program (with every family entitled to a full refund). We also don't feel prepared to serve this age group with virtual offerings right now.

We have compiled a resource of local in-person options and of online activities (from National Geographic to the Smithsonian). We hope this Google document may be of help to families trying to engage younger children this summer.

We also invite you to join us each Thursday at 4:00 pm for our free, virtual Summer Story Time, open to children of all ages and from any where in the world!

Our longstanding Early Learners program includes a course each session for Weeks 1-8 for four and five-year-olds.

For 2020, five current and former CFS school-year educators and one CFS alumna, all with early childhood experience and expertise, lead these offerings. They are assisted by a CIT and Intern each week.

Classes take place at our Main Campus early childhood center (the Campus Early School), with colorful indoor spaces and beautiful, fenced outdoor play areas.

Early Learners classes run from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Extended Day is available from 8:00 to 9:00 am and again from 3:00 to 4:00 pm/5:45 pm. Early Learners join elementary-age children in the Quaker Dome, a large athletic/PE space with lots of arts and crafts materials, toys, books, games, and other materials.

You are welcome to go onto the waitlist for one of these classes--family plans do change between enrollment and Summer and we're glad to contact a waitlist family right up to the start of a course.

Five-year-olds are also welcome to choose classes that start for that age and are held elsewhere on campus outside the Early Learners program.

Happy exploring!

Our Early Learners classes are ones that tend to fill very quickly. We apologize if you end up in a waitlist situation. We are brainstorming ways to increase our capacity.

To that end, as a pilot during Weeks 1 and 2 two experienced Summer Programs early childhood teachers (rather than the usual one) will serve a larger number of four and five-year-olds at our Campus Early School on Main Campus.

If so, get ready to spend some time this summer turning over rocks, digging in the dirt, and looking closely in trees and bushes to investigate local insects up close.
