Upper School Music Teacher

Position to start on or about August 14, 2019

The Opportunity:

Carolina Friends School (CFS) is seeking an Upper School Music Teacher (benefits-eligible)  to join our staff. The teacher will join an Upper School team committed to developing a vigorous, student-centered and mission-driven curriculum. CFS offers teachers an opportunity to engage with students on a variety of levels in and out of the classroom, and utilizes a holistic, narrative-based evaluation system.

The Position

This teacher’s responsibilities will include:

  • Teaching a minimum of 4 electives in the Upper School in music and related electives

  • Leading and managing the Upper School’s Quaker N'Oats a capella group

  • Providing audio technology support to the Performing Arts Center  

  • Participation in staff meetings/staff development, and, for the first 2 years of employment, an extensive orientation and mentoring program

Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrate an ability to teach instrumental music through flexible ensembles that include non-traditional instrumentation and students of varying skill levels

  • Demonstrate an ability to teach vocal music, which may include traditional chorus, a cappella groups, and/or musical theater

  • Demonstrate an ability to offer creative electives that would be open to all levels of musical skill

  • Demonstrate an appreciation for and knowledge of a variety of music styles and traditions, and an appreciation of the cultural context of various forms of music  

  • Enjoy working with, mentoring, and supporting teenagers in a variety of ways

  • Demonstrate a willingness to be adaptable, patient, and flexible

  • Demonstrate a commitment to continuous professional growth and an enthusiasm for learning in community

  • Help our students to make music a positive part of their lives

  • In the context of our Quaker environment, help to make art a real-life experience

  • Express willingness to understand how power and inequality, influenced by factors such as race, class, gender, sexuality, and learning and physical disabilities impact our students and families

  • Demonstrate an affinity for and interest in Quaker values as expressed in the CFS community

Experience & Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in music, or music education

  • Experience in teaching music

  • Demonstrated understanding of the primacy of relationships in teaching adolescents, and demonstrate an understanding of the importance of partnering with parents in the lives of children

  • Possession of diverse pedagogical tools and methods suited for a wide range of student learning needs
