Middle School Language Arts Teacher and Advisor (School year 2020-2021)

Position to start on or about August 15, 2020

The Opportunity:

Carolina Friends School is seeking a full-time Middle School Language Arts teacher and advisor to join our staff in August 2020.  Responsibilities will include teaching language arts curriculum for students aged ten to fourteen with a focus on the seventh and eight grade curriculum. This teacher will also serve as an advisor to students and will teach a range of elective classes based on student and teacher needs and interests. Carolina Friends School offers teachers an opportunity to engage with students on a variety of levels in and out of the classroom and utilizes a holistic, narrative-based evaluation system.

The Position: 

  • Teach 3-4 sections (12-16 students per section) of language arts and several electives

  • Lead an advisee group of approximately 11 students 

  • Participate in at least one all-school committee and, for the first two years of employment, an extensive staff orientation and mentoring program

  • Participate in the Middle School Exploratorium and other special programs as needed

  • Complete assessments and narrative evaluations for students and advisees

Traits and Requirements:

  • Experience teaching language arts at the middle school level

  • Strong understanding of early adolescent development

  • Ability to foster positive relationships with and among students and parents

  • In-depth knowledge of language arts curricula and best teaching practices with a rich repertoire of teaching strategies to address a variety of learning styles and needs

  • Strong writing and communication skills

  • Basic skills in digital communication and integrating technology in the classroom with a
    commitment to continuous professional learning, including an understanding and application of current research and participation in professional development opportunities

  • Ability and interest in collaborative work with colleagues in the Middle School and throughout Carolina Friends School

  • Ability to meet varied demands with integrity, enthusiasm, creativity, flexibility, and a sense of humor

  • Ability to engage in student assessment and evaluation

  • An understanding of and a strong affinity for Quaker philosophy and the School’s mission

  • Willingness to understand how power and inequality, influenced by factors such as race, class, gender, sexuality, and learning and/or physical disabilities impact our students, families, and colleagues
