The Opportunity:

Carolina Friends School (CFS) is seeking a full-time Director of Facilities. The Director of Facilities is a collaborative leadership role, working with the Head of School and staff to play a vital role in all services required to support the operations of Carolina Friends School’s three campuses, which includes 20 buildings and 126 acres. The Director will manage a facilities team of four and will lead the team’s efforts to provide clean, safe, efficient, healthy and structurally sound facilities that offer students and staff the best possible atmosphere for meaningful instruction and learning.   The Director of Facilities will be a “go to” resource on campus for all things pertaining to school facilities and operations and will demonstrate patience, positivity, and a sense of humor working with students, parents, colleagues, trustees, visitors, and friends of CFS. The ideal candidate is a positive and enthusiastic team and community member who embraces working with students and staff in a supportive and collaborative preK-12 environment, assisting staff to make a lasting and meaningful impact on each student.

Reporting to the Head of School, the primary responsibilities of the Director of Facilities include:

  • Management of the operations and preventive and corrective maintenance of the facilities, building systems, and infrastructure at CFS

  • Oversight for general maintenance and PPRRSM (provision for plant replacement, renewal, and special maintenance) budgets

  • Management and support of Shop Staff

  • Overseeing the work of all outside construction and maintenance vendors and contractors to ensure compliance with contractual agreements, schedules, and budgetary restrictions; arranging bids and developing specifications for all outside contractual work

  • Maintenance and development of operations policies and practices

  • Collaboration with the Director of Finance and Human Resources to develop and update a multi-year capital budget

  • Participation in school leadership team and occasional Board of Trustees meetings to update on strategic and operational efforts

  • Participation in the Campus Safety and Security, Stewardship, and Board Buildings and Grounds committees  

  • Ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory agency-required guidelines

  • Integration and support of classes and student service work into the life of the Shop

  • Oversight and support of the School’s commitment to environmental sustainability in facilities construction, maintenance, and energy use

Strong candidates will demonstrate:

  • College or trade school degree or equivalent experience

  • Experience in operations and maintenance of facilities, building systems, infrastructure, grounds, and vehicle maintenance

  • Knowledge of the principles and best practices involved in the operation and construction of plant maintenance

  • Capacity for strategic planning and visioning the School’s future from a facilities perspective

  • Effective and open communication (both orally and in writing) with all members of the School community

  • Willingness to provide operational and educational support to staff, parents, and students for regular programs, activities, and special events, including supporting classes taught in the Shop and connected to the work of the Shop

  • Ability to manage, encourage, mentor and motivate employees

  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, and time management skills

  • Interest in gaining an understanding of our current processes and recommending effective and environmentally sustainable approaches to streamline and improve them with a goal of making our three campuses safer, cleaner, more functional, and more beautiful

  • Understanding of the various environmental, health, safety, and maintenance standards required by regional, state and federal regulations and recommended best practices, and ability to work with the administration to ensure compliance

  • Skills in one or more of the following: carpentry, plumbing, electric, HVAC, boiler maintenance, geothermal, solar, well maintenance

  • Competency in word processing, spreadsheets, and work-order systems

  • Understanding of and strong affinity for Quaker philosophy and the School’s mission

  • A willingness to understand and explore how power and inequality influenced by factors such as race, class, gender, sexuality, and learning and physical disabilities impact our students and families

  • Ability to exert physical effort in heavy work, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials weighing 30 to 75 pounds; may occasionally involve heavier objects and material weighing 100 pounds or more. Capacity to work outside in hot or cold weather.

Note: Potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as strong odors, fumes, dust, wetness, humidity, machinery, vibrations, temperature/noise extremes.
