Over Spring Break, the Friends Bee Project finally kicked off with the delivery of two hives' worth of honey bees. The program began as a joint idea between Lower School teacher Jenni Scoggin and Middle School teacher Tommy Johnson. After researching the safest way to incorporate the bees on campus and establishing learning objectives, the two submitted a proposal for a Piedmont Electric Bright Ideas Education Grant, which they received.

The hives are located in the Butterfly Garden, a space between the Lower School field and athletic fields. The Middle School hive is named Rida and the Lower School hive is named The Humble House of Honey.
