| Aspiring Zookeepers in Lower School Mountain Class |
 |
Aspiring Zookeepers in Mountain Class got to spend time with a real Zookeeper on March 14. Nicole Petersen, who works with puffins at the NC Zoo, shared her knowledge of puffins and other seabirds. The class learned how feathers help with insulation, how different birds' beaks are adapted for getting different foods, and how humans impact ocean wildlife. Using beans to simulate fish, students acting as puffin parents tried to get fish for their babies while competing with humans fishing for commercial use. Other students pretended their arm was a bird's neck and tried to remove a rubber band - an example of the dangers that even small trash poses to wild birds. We enjoyed being able to ask Nicole about the real daily life of a Zookeeper. It sounds like fun and also a lot of work!
Mountain Class is grateful to GlaxoSmithKline and the NC Zoo for sponsoring our participation in the "Keepers in the Classroom" program.
