In Memorium: Cal Geiger--CFS teacher, Volunteer, Board Member

If you learned the value and joy of service at CFS, Cal has touched your life.
If you were a student in the Upper School in the ‘70s and 80s, you remember Cal Geiger.
If you took basket weaving in a Lower School interest group during that last 20+ years, you knew Cal Geiger.
Carolina Friends School lost a wise and steadfast friend and leader on the morning of June 1, when Calhoun Geiger died peacefully at his home in Hillsborough, North Carolina.

A Memorial Meeting for Worship under the care of Durham Friends Meeting will be held at Carolina Friends School, in the Center Building, on Saturday, June 27, at 4:00 p.m.

Newton Grove Farmworkers Festival

A group of Upper School students and staff traveled to Newton Grove on the weekend of September 20 for the Farmworkers Festival. CFS Upper School has forged strong connections with farmworkers there through Father Tony and the Episcopal Farmworkers Ministry. CFS students raised $270, which they donated to Father Tony's soccer tournament prize fund. Many will return to Newton Grove in December during Upper School’s winter service days.

Upper School staff member Susan Kincaid is also working with a group of sophomores who have adopted a work camp; they will raise money that will help support the farmworkers at this camp. Through this work with Father Tony and the farmworkers, CFS students are learning important lessons about immigration, inclusivity, and what it means to be a global citizen.

On Education

Duke University Dean and Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education, Steve Nowicki, is the parent of a CFS alumnus and a member of the CFS Board of Trustees. He recently spoke to new students at Duke about education.

"…the acquisition of new ideas is not something you experience passively... You need to keep an open mind to learn, but this by itself also isn’t enough. You need to actively find things to put into that open mind. Learning is not a spectator sport!"

Upper School welcomes Alicia Lucasi!

Alicia, from La Paz, Bolivia, will be an intern in the Upper School for the 2008-09 school year. Alicia is working to become an English teacher in Bolivia. At CFS she will teach Spanish and Bolivian Culture and will work individually with students who need practice speaking Spanish. As a Quaker, she marvels at our silent meetings for worship, since in Bolivia Quaker meetings are not silent; instead there is music and singing, as well as a message from the pastor. Alicia is staying with families of CFS students and graduates. We’re glad to have her with us!

Back-to-School Picnic

On Sunday, August 24, the CFS community gathered to welcome in the school year at the annual back-to-school picnic. It's hard to know for sure, but we're estimating that 600 attended. A pre-picnic welcome for new families and their buddies helped to ease the transition for the newer members of our community. This year we welcomed 78 new students to CFS, and 17 of them were new not just to us but also to the Triangle, with some having moved within recent weeks (and one family having arrived a few hours before the picnic!). We're glad for our longtime families and new ones too, and are eagerly looking forward to the 2008-09 school year.

The Saga of a Celebratory Candle

How do you mail a small candle without having it crumble? Ask John Ladd, director of development at CFS.

In February, over 100 supporters of CFS gathered to celebrate the success of the $4 million Next Step Campaign. At the end of the evening each person received a candle. The light was passed from person to person until the flickering flames brightly illuminated the entire room.

“It was a moving experience, and we wanted to somehow share it with the many friends of CFS who lived too far away to join us that night,” said John. So the development team picked up the challenge of sending candles to these supporters. Read more...

What if the world were a village?  The Middle School’s Global Village class is attempting to answer just that.  Inspired by David Smith’s book, If the World Were a Village, Robert’s class has created a wiki space that captures students’ perspectives on our global community and the impact that its ever-increasing size has on our planet.  So far, students have compiled research on a wide range of issues that currently impact our global community including: technology, languages, pollution and population.   Although students are continuously updating and revising their wiki pages, feel free to take a look at their work in progress at http://cfsglobalvillage.wikispaces.com/.
