Academics
The course offerings in the Upper School are rich and varied. Staff members seek to meet students where they are and challenge them to achieve on an individual level. Teachers are encouraged to teach their passions creating a wide variety of courses offered each term. The philosophy of Carolina Friends School encourages individual achievement but does not bestow individual awards or honors. The school does not offer any honors or Advanced Placement classes. Instead of assigning letter or numerical grades, the Upper School uses a non-graded, non-ranked, narrative evaluation system that is personal and comprehensive. Each trimester families receive extensive written evaluations that review the student’s overall progress in each course including: achievement on papers and exams, contributions to class, sense of responsibility, and growth of understanding. Students earn credit or no credit for each course.
Students work with their advisors to develop a schedule this is right for them, ensuring that they meet the requirements for graduation.
The pages in this section offer the following information: Course Descriptions for the 2007-2008 school year; Departments offers an overview of each department; Graduation Requirements outlines what specifically is needed for graduation; Schedule shows the daily schedule for the Upper School; and the Upper School Profile includes many relevant facts about the school including a Curriculum Guide and an eight-year college matriculation list.
