| End-of-Year Experiences |
 |
Each year, after the completion of final examinations, Upper School students and staff spend approximately two weeks in alternative courses of study, which involve trips, projects, and internships. Each program is paid for through regular tuition, with the expectation that each student can join two off-campus trips in a four-year period. Recent examples include whitewater rafting out West, home building in Puerto Rico, volunteering with Head Start in Charleston, a rails-to-trails cycling experience between North Carolina and Pennsylvania, and hiking in the Pisgah National Forest. During the other two end-of-year sessions, students participate in on-campus programs, independent study, or internships. Recent offerings include an on-campus stained glass course, a photography experience, and an ABC's of Service program. For internships, students have worked with legislators, physicians, midwives, community agencies research scientists, and artists.
