1. The philosophy of the Lower School is rooted both in the principles of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) and in sound principles of child development, which view each child as a whole person. We believe that social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth are equally important in the child's total development. The School focuses on the unique worth of the individual, recognizing that each child grows in different dimensions and at different rates. It also supports the development of each student as a responsible member of the classroom and school community.

2. The Lower School curriculum and methodology is based on the developmental theories of Jean Piaget and other learning theorists such as Howard Gardner and his work on Multiple Intelligences and Erik Erickson and his work on stages of social/emotional development. It is understood that young children pass through developmental stages based on an individual maturation rate. These cognitive milestones predict a child's ability to accommodate specific types of experiences and concepts. The program also reflects the multiple ways and modes of internalizing and expressing knowledge.

3. The curriculum of the Lower School is an emerging one also based on the child and the world in which we live. Curriculum topics, for example, are often drawn from significant events and experiences that have moved students and teachers. Teachers are encouraged to teach to their passions.

4. Student investigations and projects are among the primary elements of the Lower School curriculum, particularly in the areas of science and social studies.

note: Lower School currently consists of four classrooms. River and Sky Classes have students six to eight years old. Mountain and Forest Classes have students eight to ten years old.
