Lower School Library Curriculum

 

I. Content
Younger Classes:
Students will be taught the basics of book care, library behavior, listening skills and appreciation of books.
Older Classes:
Students will reinforce lessons from previous years and learn necessary vocabulary - fiction, nonfiction, author, title, illustrator, publisher. Students will gain independence in locating books, following Dewey decimal system, and use of computer.
II. Skills and Processes
Teaching activities will guide 1st and 2nd year students to:
  • care for a book
  • locate easy fiction section in the library
  • use shelf markers
  • check out books on computer
  • return books on or before due date
  • develop a love and appreciation for books
  • develop confidence in looking for level appropriate books
  • strengthen listening skills
  • follow directions
  • develop expressive language skills
  • strengthen concepts of alphabetical order and numerical order
  • identify the author, illustrator and table of contents of a book
  • identify the title page
  • recognize and understand the sections of the library (E< F< NF< Ref)
  • understand the call numbers for fiction and nonfiction books
  • become familiar with the ten sections of the nonfiction library section

  • to use the table of contents in selected texts
  • to select challenging and stimulating chapter books
  • to read a diverse and varied selection of chapter books
  • to increase the number of chapter books read
  • to use reference books for classroom research activities such as the encyclopedia, dictionary and thesaurus
  • to use the computer to search the library for specific or theme related reading material
  • to return books to the appropriate place on the books shelves
