Special Events

Generally...

From the all-school picnic in August to graduation in June, the school year at Carolina Friends is filled with special occasions. A highlight every year is the series of events that mark the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (in 2012, for example, featuring a keynote and other presentations by Freedom Rider Joan Trumpauer Mulholland, in 2015 featuring reflections by CFS co-founders Martha and Peter Klopfer).

We've hosted an address by the director of the Peace Corps; opened an Art at the Center! photo exhibition called "Shared Origins: An Adoptive Family's Journey Back to Ethiopia" and exhibits showcasing the art of Lower School fourth-year students; and raised funds for an Upper School End-of-Year service trip at a Galapagos Extravaganza (with Ecuadorian food, music by student group Old 86, a silent auction, and a mini-lecture by Dr. John Bruno, then a Lower School parent and a UNC marine biologist who works in the Galapagos).

We hope you'll feel a warm welcome to join us for milestone moments in the life of our community.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Celebration and Service

Monday, January 16, 2017

Our theme for this year is Teaching Peace Through Compassion. With this theme in mind, every member of the community will make a Wish Flag that relates to Kindness, Love, Peace or Compassion. We hope to have hundreds of flags hanging in the gym lobby when people enter on January 16. On that morning, we will have blank flags available for parents, friends, and visitors, so they can add their wishes to the students’ flags. All community members are invited to our annual celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. this coming Monday at 10:30 am in the Gym.

We are excited to continue our tradition of participating in Book Harvest’s Dream Big Book Drive. Watch for bins in all units.

We agreed that we want to continue a yearlong service project--one that would be appropriate for all ages. Our partnership with Habitat for Humanity continues to be a wonderful relationship for us. The Interfaith Build brings together diverse communities of faith throughout the area to build homes for local families. This year, we are working in the old Northside community in Chapel Hill. Everyone 16 years old or older is welcome to volunteer on the site. In order to volunteer, please CLICK this link

Grandparents and Family Friends Day

Friday, April 3, 2015 ~ arrival to noon departure

A favorite day on campus! Every year we are delighted to welcome our students' grandparents and family friends to a cherished celebrationGuests visit classrooms in the morning for special presentations and refreshments.

If you would like your grandparents or family friends to attend, now is the time to ask them to plan to come to campus on Friday morning, April 3, 2015. Out of respect for families and their individual wishes, we do not send a save-the-date to all grandparents.  We will follow up with a request to parents for addresses of whom to send event information in late January.

In early March, we will send the schedule, maps, and driving directions to those who have RSVP'd.

Authors' Tea — 27 Views of CFS

Sunday, March 8, 2015, 3:00 pm

Upper School Meeting Hall

Two years in the making and in honor of our 50th Anniversary, we have compiled a collection of essays, short stories, poems, and remembrances. Our collection of authors includes three principals,10 staff members (former and current), nine alums, 20 parents (former and current), two co-founders, one basketball coach, and many published authors.

At our Authors' Tea contributors will read from their writings and share their experiences at CFS. Of course, a variety of teas and yummy treats will be on hand. We hope you will join us in this continuation of our 50th celebration as we learn about just some of yesterday’s memories that brought us to today. You will be an important part of the discussion!
