Workshops
Backyard Broadway
Susan KincaidThe spotlight is on you! Calling all actresses, actors, and directors to help us put on a
play! To help develop your acting skills, we play theater games, do warm ups, and practice vocal
exercises. The first week starts with play development -- creating characters and dialogue. Next,
throw in some friends for interaction. Then we put them in a place, give them a problem, and help them solve it.
The second week we stage the play while creating sets, costumes, and props. Then we invite family, friends,
and other campers to attend a special performance on Friday!
Enroll early as this class fills f-a-s-t! Basketball Camp w/Jordan
Jordan Shamp
Sharpen your basketball skills with Jordan! The camp will be more challenging than his regular Summer Sports camps, which are held for ages 8-11, as we'll be focusing on skills, drills and thrills. The emphasis is on improving your style and your form with some direction and training. There will be plenty of time for game playing and personal training as the workshop size is capped at 14 players. If B-ball is your passion and advancing your skills is your desire, then sign up now for this action packed camp. Other basketball sports camps are held for ages 8 - 11 throughout the summer.
Batik Blast
Jean Cerasani
Batik is an ancient art form using wax to protect parts of cloth from dye exposure. We use this method combined with other fabric dyeing methods to create unique and intriguing designs. Campers can create patches for clothing collages, art to wear tee-shirts, pillow cases, wall hangings, a new cape for the dog...the possibilities are limitless and the radiant colors a delight. You will work with fabric provided as well as items you bring from home. As the process is simple, campers will often have several projects going on at the same time.
Beading & Basketry
Jodie Hagenberger
Anything you can imagine can be made with beads. The jewelry we make will involve a few basic techniques. After we complete some basic forms, each student will choose one or two kinds of techniques and will take off on an independent project of his or her own creation. In the last two days, we embark on a basket-making project that will involve beading to showcase the versatile use of beads. We may even make some of our own beads!
BodyMind Camp for Girls
Julia Hartsell
Let's become more in sync with our bodies through yoga, dance and hooping. This is a workshop of discovery and practice. We will relax and pamper ourselves; cultivate our senses; experiment with flower essences; practice massage; use percussive rhythms for group meditation. While not exactly a “spa”, we’ll learn some methods of relaxation, self-care, yoga for body strength and flexibility, and hooping for cardio and balance. A fun and varied camp.
Clay Works
Jodie Hagenberger
Do you have some experience working with clay and enjoy using your hands? Then join us as we learn to utilize the unique qualities of clay to make figurines, jewelry, pots and other fun projects. We use a potter’s wheel to learn basic technique for throwing clay in a one-on-one lesson. Our other activities may include a pit firing (weather permitting) and plenty of soul-nurturing clay projects. The final sessions are a two-week camp for those wishing to extend projects and skill development. Please come dressed to get dirty and also bring a box to bring home projects at the end of the week.
Clothing Collage
Jean Cerasani
Ransack your closet or the thrift shop to find specialty garments, or take your favorite jeans and a T-shirt and transform them into a work of art to wear. We use paints, dyes, needle and thread--anything to create an expressive piece of art that can be worn. At week’s end, we will stage a fashion show. This camp is an excellent way to gain the rudiments of costume making for theater and dance or to personalize your own clothing and make a statement. Campers should have some sewing experience.
Code Monkeys
Andy Rose
Love to play computer games? Wouldn't it be great to be able to create your own games? You can! From the initial idea to a completed game you can play with friends, you will learn the entire process of video game production. We use GameMaker, a powerful but easy-to-learn game creation program. You will be able to jump right in and make a game the first day! Once we learn the basics, we will be able to use GameMaker's built in programming language to create very sophisticated games. Campers don't need to know any computer languages but should be familiar with using PC computers and Windows.

Princess of the Forest
Abby Snow
Step into the forest where the focus is both on community building and on the ancient and global lore of strong women who work well with nature. Learn how to identify plants, work with edible and medicinal plants, and learn some basic survival skills from the forest. We will create facials and herbal treatments with real plants and mud from what we harvest and make from the forest. We’ll weave and create our own art forms from natural materials. Dress appropriately for some light trekking, but not too much, since you are princesses.
Pull Up A Chair
Jean Cerasani
Give new life to the old.... worn and gently used wood furniture, decorations and knick-knacks. Start hunting now at thrift stores, yard sales or even your local dump for pieces you would like to revive. Prepare to get dirty...sanding, painting and maybe knocking a few nails. Whatever you fancy whether it is a tiger on a chair or a polka-dot frame, together with acrylic paints and our imaginations, we can give new life to the old! Bring your vintage pieces to camp on the
first day. We'll also have some pieces for you to work on, but your own additions of chairs,
tables, candlesticks, picture frames, bookcases, desks, etc. are yours to take home.
Riverwalking
Strap on your boots and get ready for an outdoor adventure! Riverwalking is learning through exploration in a hands-on, intense and challenging week outdoors: hot, sweaty, dirty and fun! We will spend a majority of each day at New Hope Creek or the Eno River. We'll explore the creeks and the flora and fauna and also enjoy sitting on rocks, hiking, swimming and splashing. This is workshop that will involve heavy to moderate trekking. A letter with preparation details will be sent to each camper prior to the start.
Heavy to moderate trekking and some tick prevention (long
pants...application of insect repellant) and sunscreen application
prior to camp should be part of the camper's preparation each morning
at home. Instructors are
Tim Wells Sessions 1&3;
Hal Engler Sessions 4&5; and,
Jonathan McGovern Session 8.
Robotics & Chess
Len Bullock
Learn Robotics—the study of science and technology as it relates to robots and how they are designed, constructed and manufactured to solve problems. Robotics is closely related to computer programming, engineering, electronics and construction. We use Mind Storms programming software with Robotics kits. You’ll also make some robot creations that will be designed to perform
specific tasks. To give us a break from robots, we’ll learn the game of chess—the ancient pastime used by kings to establish laws—and the four major principles. You don’t have to be skilled in math or science to enjoy this game that is known as the ultimate exercise of the mind. We have enough robot sets for campers to work in pairs - so plenty of hands-on for everyone. Chess is, of course, optional. There will also be time for outdoor activities to stretch a bit. Lunch is often eaten outdoors or up in the gym where campers can play basketball (optional).
Space Camp
Karen Kingrea
Leave gravity behind and come to space camp! We’ll learn about NASA space programs past, present and future: Gemini, Apollo, Phoenix and Constellation. We’ll study the Saturn V rocket that first carried man to the moon to the Ares V rocket in which he will return. Participate in NASA Design Challenges each day. We’ll design and test a robotic arm, create an air bag crash vehicle, build a moon station and simulate an international space station module. Come test out your skills in aeronautics!
Summer Sports
We’ll learn basic rules and techniques of basketball, Frisbee, soccer, and some indoor gym games (as well as Capture the Flag!) for the joy and fun of playing. We will focus on technique, skill development and team building. All activities take place on our outdoor playing fields (using cooler morning temperatures) and in our air-conditioned gym. Sports experience not necessary! All levels are welcome!
Super Scientists
Karen Kingrea
Want
to be a scientist? Come experience a different career in science each
day. Make slime as a chemist. Hunt for fossils as a paleontologist.
Dig for artifacts as an archeologist. Design the perfect aircraft as
an aerospace engineer. Solve a crime as a forensic scientist. There
are so many areas of science to explore…these are just the beginning!
Totally Theatrical
Susan Kincaid
Sign up early as these classes fill fast—everyone loves to be on stage. We will work on developing your acting skills by playing theater games, doing exercises to warm up and practicing vocal exercises. We will follow the same procedure as in Backyard Broadway. The highlight of both weeks is the performance! See you on stage! This is Susan’s 17th year offering this camp!
Ultimate games!
Olynda Spitzer & Alex Smith
Games are fun, exciting ways to develop our physical, mental and social skills. In this camp we will play every kind of game imaginable! Ancient games, brand new games, games from around the world, and games native to North Carolina. We'll play big team games and small one-on-one games. Through these games we will hone our powers of observation, reasoning, logic, and memory. We will also develop our athletic abilities - our strength, kinesthetic awareness, flexibility and more. Perhaps most importantly, all of our play will give us ample opportunity to practice the many social skills that it takes to be a successful "team player".
Video Pros
Sam Miron
Do you often find yourself sitting in a movie theater thinking "I can do that" or perhaps even "I could have done that better"? From storyboards and shot basics to directing actors and video editing we will teach you how to hone in on those ambitions. We’ll cover the basics of professional filmmaking. You will direct your own movie, work as a cinematographer, edit and act for a short movie of your choice. Bring your imagination and any camera skills, although none are required, and most importantly bring your videotapes and video camera if you have one. Editing computers and software are available on site. Sam is presently a student at NYU in Film. You can take this course for two weeks to continue to work on your film or just one week to get the basics.
Watercolor & Drawing
Jean Cerasani
Get ready to limber up with some fluid drawing work and learn the basics of handling watercolors—washes, glazes, dry brush, resist and lots more fun ways to move color on paper. We will adapt our drawings and plan a painting. Weather permitting, campers can do some pleine aire painting à la French Impressionists. Plenty of inspirational material to stimulate creative thoughts! Experimentation is definitely encouraged. *Includes material fee.
Web Design
Len Bullock
Learn to create a website with pictures, graphics, text, animations and favorite links. Discover how the pros make websites using Adobe Dreamweaver and Adobe Fireworks. We will concentrate on the basics of web page design, as well as creating graphics and editing pictures for the web. Campers should be comfortable working with PC computers. Any previous knowledge of building websites is helpful but not required
