Kidspace (Ages 6-8)
Kidspace is a series of weekly camps based on different themes. They
take place at our regular camp times: 9 am to 3 pm on the same campus.
Class size is 26 with two teachers and two assistants. Campers swim
twice a week at Camp New Hope nearby. You can choose to mix Kidspace
with workshops throughout the summer. The difference between Kidspace
and the workshops is that the class size is larger; workshops (above)
have 13 campers with one teacher and one assistant. And Kidspace is the
only camp that goes swimming. We do not recommend this camp for ages under 6 as they will be swimming Sessions 1-7.
Session 1 • June 21-25 • FOOD FUN
Calling our top chefs! Our week is centered on food... that translates
to fun. Mix and measure and have lots of tasting pleasures. There will
be an array of tastes from different cultures to tantalize even the
fussiest taste buds. At the end, take home a recipe book billed with
this week’s favorite “adventures” to try at home. Thomas Latimer
Session 2 • June 28-July 2 • OUTDOOR EXPLORERS
Who knew there could be so much adventure waiting right outside your
door! Get up close and personal scavenging the jungles of our very own
backyard. We will start our own rock collections, make bughouses, go
creek stomping, and practice the art of nature photography. Christine Amabilie
Session 3 • July 5-9 • WEIRD SCIENCE
Have you ever seen a bottle swallow an egg? Have you ever made slime or
watched an exploding soda? If you don’t mind getting a bit slimy and
you do enjoy making big messes, this is a week you won’t want to miss. Christine Amabilie & Thomas Latimer
Session 4 • July 12-16 • SUMMER CARNIVAL
Come spend the week "clowning" around and learning the fine arts of slapstick comedy, joke telling, juggling, miming, face painting and costume making. We will create games and activities to use at our very own end of the week Carnival. Christine Amabilie
Session 5 • July 19-23 •
Session 6 • July 26-30 • EARTH ALIVE!
Take a trip deep down through the layers of the Earth. We will dig in
the soil, try a dirt snack (if you dare!), and create our own
earthquake. Later we will make volcanoes with flowing lava, build
mountains and caves, test magnetism and gravity, and explore the many
uses and functions of earth materials like clay, mud, sand and rock. Christine Amabilie & Thomas Latimer
Session 7 • August 2-6 • FAIRYLAND FANTASIES
Let’s bring our favorite fairytales to life by retelling stories we
know by heart. We’ll play the characters and become the stars of our
own movies! From classics like “Beauty and the Beast” to “The Princess
and the Frog,” we will create a DVD treasury of works of our choice to
keep. Christine Amabilie
Session 8 • August 9-13 • SUMMER BASH
What do you get when you mix artistic talent, imagination, creative
spirit, and “recycled” items together? You get a Trash Bash! Our
imaginations will run wild as we create elaborate costumes and build
castles out of found materials. We’ll make unique musical instruments
and form a trash band. Get ready to play extraordinary games and put on
a puppet play with what some people call “ordinary things!” (No
swimming scheduled this week; water play on campus.) Stefanie Boone & Melissa Stewart
Workshops
Acting Out!
Caitlin Conner
Summer is a great time to stimulate the “creative juices.” The Acting Out workshop is designed to do just that! We’ll engage in theater games and improvisations and work on staging, movement and voice. We will reenact some of our favorite fairy/folk tales with numerous games to play. We’ll dramatize
Animal Safari
Mary Grace Miller
Let’s explore the animal kingdom on our own safari. We’ll learn about animals in different countries as well as our own. Why do they have zoos? Why are some animals dangerous? We’ll trek outside on a hunt for evidence of fauna in the area, even visiting our neighbor’s farm. There will be stories, crafts, games, and adventures. Come prepared to talk about your own pets as well, and bring photos.
Art al Fresco
Megan Lucchesi
Using gourds as our canvas, garden art can be anything you dream, with a little sanding, some acrylic paints, and our imaginations. With our paint and old wood we’ll explore nature for inspiration and create a second garden art piece. Birdhouses or feeders, mask or creatures, the possibilities are endless! Dress in painting clothes and shoes to hike in for our trek outdoors to collect items for projects.
Art Sparks
Becky Schoeneck
Ages 6-8
Come join Becky, as we set off on an exciting adventure in creative explorations! We will explore different mediums such as colored pencils, markers, paint, pastel chalk, fabric, clay and dough to create watercolors, drawings, and paintings, collages and sculptures. Our work will take us indoors and outdoors as we take time for hikes down to the creek. Nature will inspire us with new art ideas! By week’s end, we can present our portfolios to family and friends in our artist exhibit.
Clay Explorers
Jodie Hagenberger
It is never too early to start a passion for clay. This class will begin to teach children how to use their hands as the best tool. So much about clay or pottery is in the experience of making an object. We will focus on the process of creation rather than trying to make that perfect product. We will learn about where clay comes from and how it is used in the world. By the end of the week we will have created several small projects that will be fired and can be brought home. There is also plenty of free clay time to get dirty and let the imaginations in the group run wild!
Crafty Cats
Tonie Lilley
Cat mania strikes again! We’ll act, have daily trivia challenges, and lots of crafty projects…catnip, mice and other cat toys, cat prints inspired by medieval woodblock prints and cat watercolors modeled on Japanese ink drawings. We’ll read folk tales, story books, and nonfiction books about cats. No dogs allowed!
Dance & Motion
Jody Cassell
Swoop and swirl your way in to learning scintillating movements from around the world. Come and explore dance concepts. We’ll create our own collaborations and spark our way into summer fun. We’ll even take an environmental sculpture, a postcard, picture or news story and construct our own dance creations. All levels welcomed
Earth Arts
Olynda Spitzer
Come discover the grace, beauty and awesome forces of nature that have inspired artists throughout time. We will hone our observation skills while spending time in the surrounding forest and use many natural elements to inspire our art works. We will create art in several modalities: movement, storytelling, visual art and music. Possible activities include: earthen sculptures, mandala making, yoga, journal making, nature inspired movement and dance, flower and leaf prayer flags, and more!
Earth Circle
Heather Cramer
Through art, storytelling, sharing, and social activities we'll connect to and intersect with the outdoors, nature, and, of course, our earth. Art activities include totem animal masks, drums, sand painting, wind mobiles, waterfall paintings, candle making and much more! We invite families to join us Friday afternoon for our art showing. We will spend time outdoors and indoors as we create our projects experimenting with paint, sand, drawing, wax, and clay. There's lots of time for outdoor play as well as indoor creativity! A great way to try out different art mediums and have fun.
Fairies & Trolls
Betsy Blair
Come start each morning with a centering charm and a spiraling dance as we explore the mystical world of fairies and trolls. We’ll alternate between full-bodied creative movement and nature-based art projects. After lunch, we’ll rest on pretend green moss and listen to fairy tales from different countries. We’ll draw, paint, spread glitter, and shine. Then we’ll practice for a parent sharing on Friday afternoon.
Forest Trek
Must love the outdoors! Get geared up for a trek into the woods. We’ll be stream watching and creek exploring and will discover all kinds of fascinating critters, ferns, mosses, animal tracks, and leaf patterns. The shallow water holds many surprises and is home to a whole natural community. It’s always cooler in the forest so we’ll spend the morning outdoors and when the temperature rises, we’ll collect our found treasures and bring them to the indoor classroom for further exploration. Sessions 1 & 7 Crystal Auguste; Session 4 Jami Haigler.
Hidden Kingdoms
Jami Haigler.
Let your imaginations run wild -- we’re entering into a magical kingdom where all of the storybook characters can come “alive.” It’s a hidden kingdom of fairies and trolls. Where do these creatures live? Our mission is to find out more about these magical creatures. We will make fairy houses in the forest, fairy castles out of sand, troll caves from clay, and troll pillows with fabric glue. We’ll also create flags and shields from paper maché, boats to float, magic wands, dragon eggs and puppets
(How to) Get Lost!
Patty Bonito
Come and find out why it’s important to know where you are all the time! We’ll study the landscape for landmarks and landforms. Then we’ll create and read maps and models of the campus and environs. We hide treasures, mark them on the map, and see if other campers can find the treasures using our maps. We’ll examine temperature, wind, rain, clouds, and the sun to learn about weather and observe clouds to make weather predictions. We’ll tell time without a watch, find North without a compass, identify bugs and pick up other useful survival skills.
KIDS, Inc.
Lillian Norman
Let’s make our own village and create our own business. We’ll begin with a business idea for our development, then expand on our ideas as we perform surveys to find out what our business needs are. We’ll act as consumers and owners and come up with our own financial plan. We’ll work with budgets, start up costs, financial planning, how to get the capital … whew! Come join this team of beginning entrepreneurs as Kids Inc. takes on its biggest project yet, “The Community Development Project.” This is better than a lemonade stand!
Kitchen Works
Abby Snow
Come learn the basics about the kitchen…why do we need measuring spoons and cups? How do you use spatulas and wire whisks? Why does yeast rise and what do we use it for? We’ll do some of our own measuring, whipping, grinding, baking, and cleaning up! There’s work in the kitchen but also lots of fun as we pretend we’re Julia Childs learning to create new recipes. We’ll make our own recipe books as well as taste our concoctions.
Magical Quest
Tonie Lilley
Aspiring young wizards, be prepared for almost anything! Join us for a week of magic and fantasy as we explore the realm of legends, myths and fairy tales. Each day we will learn about the magic associated with the natural elements of our world: air, fire, water, earth and spirits. We’ll create artifacts, spells and meet fantastical creatures. Please wear clothing that is suitable for messy potion making. Yikes!
Mystical Fairies
Becky Schoeneck
In this enchanting camp we’ll begin by transforming ourselves into fairies, complete with wings, wands and crowns. Then we’ll create a wide variety of tiny fairy items: boats, houses, butterflies and pom-pom friends to keep the fairies company. We’ll mix up magical potions, map out enchanted lands, and learn mysterious codes to write to the fairies. Our special projects will involve painting, drawing, and clay.
Myth Busters
Meg Williamson
We’ll start with the Greek and Roman myths. We’ll make a mythology “Facebook,” drawing mythological characters we learn about and things they are famous for. We’ll make our own books and costumes and props for photos of our favorite characters, like Zeus or Atlas or Minerva. And we’ll go outside and create our own myths of how objects in nature came to be. How did the elephant’s trunk get stretched out, and what are the seasons all about? How did the peacock’s tail get eyes? Come join us for a week of tall tales and memorable myths.
Paint Explosions
Jodie Hagenberger
Our days will be filled with exploring painting techniques that are both fun and active. Each day we will learn a new technique like sponge painting and water coloring. We will also have free time that will allow students to be self guided in their explorations or engage in a totally different kind of activity. Come ready to get messy.
Secret Life of Insects
Jami Haigler
Enter the mysterious world of insects and find out who your real insect buddies are. We’ll explore anthills and learn about beehives. Jami who is a beekeeper herself will bring in some honey for tasting and show off her beekeeping tools. We’ll create butterfly mobiles, ladybug sculptures and dragonfly art pieces. We’ll also spend time making fun creations to play with like gak, silly putty, play dough, and face paint and whip up some other creations that we can sample like ants on a log and rice crispy treats
Story Art
Natasha Shannon
Lauren King
Storytelling through dramatic and visual art! We’ll use acting games, storytelling, visual arts and creative movement to bring life to stories. Using body movements to represent animals and other characters in the stories, we’ll go on adventures. On an outdoor adventure, we’ll find props to enrich our visual art. Each camper will have a unique story told through several forms of visual and expressive arts. The goal at the end is for each camper to believe “My imagination is capable of anything!”
Summer Slide In
Let’s spend some easy days together reading great books, working on art and cooking activities, and also spending plenty of time outdoors enjoying free choice games and activities. Our books will inspire our projects. We may find ourselves working on building telescopes, engineering rocket launches, creating fairy garden structures, baking muffins and journal writing. It will be a fun and instructive week to enjoy some great literature along with good summer fun. For those campers about to enter CFS as students, this is an excellent opportunity to get acquainted with the environment as Debbie helps you "slide in".
Super Green Adventures
Stephanie Boone & Melissa Stewart
Come explore ways to be green! Every day there will be a new focus: organic gardening, reused box bash, green bubble blitz, eco art and games, composting and gardening, and nature day. During the week we will learn how to compost, build forts, create bubble wands, turn recycled items into art, make crafts and create birdhouses for our gardens. Every day is a new adventure in our Green Adventure with plenty of time for games and songs that go along with our theme for the day. You’ll come away knowing a bit more about what being “green” is all about and have fun to boot. (Two sections)
Xtreme Earth
Patty Bonito
Volcanoes, floods, droughts, hurricanes, and earthquakes can be scary, but understanding the science behind them helps. We will create chemical eruptions, make Jell-O earthquakes, build a dam and flood landscapes. There will be a geology day, weather day, topographic mapping day, and a damming and flooding day. We’ll all make a rain stick to take home. A camp you won’t want to miss!
