Head of School Welcome

Twenty-three years ago, when searching for a school for my daughter and son, I was hoping to find a place where teachers would see them, love them, and nurture their growth in mind, body, and spirit. I sought that school with an educator’s eye informed by own life’s work as a teacher and a teacher educator. The day I made my way to Carolina Friends School, I knew something was different here. And I could sense that this difference was intentional and rich. I had found home for my children and ultimately for my work as an educator.

What drew me and my family to CFS could fundamentally be described as the opportunity for education that was dynamic, experiential, and grounded in Quaker philosophy. Our mission is thriving and palpable as witnessed in daily opportunities to be inspired and engaged intellectually, creatively, and collaboratively. Whether playing in the creek, choreographing a dance, engineering a solar car, or preparing for a meeting with senators on criminal justice reform, our students are actively interacting with the world and seeking ever unfolding truths. And they are doing so in balance with quiet reflection and meaningful respectful relationships including those with dedicated teachers who challenge, encourage, and celebrate them.

It is a privilege to learn and work alongside our students and our staff and to do so in a community committed to lifting the light in each child, staff member, and parent. I hope your own search for a school leads you to explore Carolina Friends School and to see what is possible in a school that is different by design.

Meet the Next Head of School!

For the Fall/Winter 2016 issue of We & Thee magazine, students from across campus submitted questions to help us get to know our next Head of School, Karen Cumberbatch. Karen will join us on July 1, 2017,  bringing 22 years of experience in independent school administration and teaching, including 20 years in Quaker schools. We hope you enjoy her responses as much as we do!
