A community of 480 students ages 3 to 18 – and over 80 staff.

A main campus of 76 acres, situated in the woods with a stream and nature trails, and located fifteen minutes from Durham, Chapel Hill, and Hillsborough. Fourteen classroom buildings, including libraries, science and computer laboratories, art and music studios, a performing arts center, and a gymnasium, plus playgrounds and baseball and soccer fields.

Founded in 1962 by members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). At least two-thirds of the CFS Board of Directors are members of the Durham and Chapel Hill Friends Meetings. CFS was one of the first schools in the South to pursue a policy of racial integration.

Three Early Schools for 3- to 6-year-olds – one on the main campus, one in Durham near Duke University, and one in Chapel Hill near UNC.

In recent years, 96% of CFS graduates have gone on to college, with an excellent acceptance rate at the state’s most selective public university and outstanding offers for scholarships and grants. The US Office of Education has recognized the Upper School as an “Exemplary Private Secondary School.”

A total operating budget of approximately $6.9 million. Endowments valued around $7.5 million and no mortgages.

Around $600,000 in need-based tuition aid awarded to almost 18% of CFS students (9% of tuition revenue, plus some from endowments, amounting to 8.7% of the total operating budget).

Tuition from $7880 to $13,880 per year for Early School (depending on length of school day); $11,600 for Lower School; $12,600 for Middle School; and $13,530 for Upper School (2007-08).

Admissions decisions made in February and March. To be considered in the first round of admissions, apply by January 4 for Early Schools and January 15 for Lower, Middle, and Upper School.

Approximately 22% of CFS students come from families who are African-American or African, Asian-American or Asian, Hispanic or Latino, Native American, Middle Eastern, multiracial, or international.

A gender-balanced teaching staff known for excellence, creativity, and dedication. Staff members have an average of 20 years of teaching experience, and over 47% have earned graduate degrees.

Interscholastic sports programs in Middle and Upper School (through the Triad Athletic Conference); after-school care in Lower and Middle School, and a wide array of summer workshops and day camps.

CFS is accredited by the Southern Association of Independent Schools and is a member of the Friends Council on Education, an associate member of the North Carolina Association of Independent Schools, and a member of the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association. The Early Schools are licensed by the State of North Carolina Division of Child Development.
