Students are required to include two community service classes in their schedule each school year (eight total classes required to graduate). One of these classes, Construction Maintenance (two terms required to graduate), asks students to take responsibility for the upkeep and maintenance of the campus (including emptying trash and recycling, building and refurbishing structures, and beautifying the space).

For two days before Winter Break, staff members coordinate service projects at local organizations that touch their interests. Students sign up and spend these two days doing community service at organizations such as: Durham Land Trust, Alliance of AIDS Services Carolina, Salvation Army, Life Span Life Skills, and Piedmont Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.

End of Year experiences include service opportunities for students. In Puerto Rico, students built concrete houses for families in need. In Costa Rica, students worked on a sustainable organic farm.

Off campus service classes include opportunities to work in the local community. Each term, for example, a group of students goes to a local elementary school to tutor twice a week.
